Paleontologists brought to tears, laughter by Creation Museum
This brings together so many fascinating topics: scientific literacy (or lack thereof), anti-intellectualism, and the rise of the religiously insane:

For a group of paleontologists, a tour of the Creation Museum seemed like a great tongue-in-cheek way to cap off a serious conference.

But while there were a few laughs and some clowning for the camera, most left more offended than amused by the frightening way in which evolution -- and their life's work -- was attacked.

"It's sort of a monument to scientific illiteracy, isn't it?" said Jerry Lipps, professor of geology, paleontology and evolution at University of California, Berkeley.

"Like Sunday school with statues... this is a special brand of religion here. I don't think even most mainstream Christians would believe in this interpretation of Earth's history."

according to the "Right", liberals kill their babies, or are gay and cannot reproduce ... only enhance the ranks "by recruiting with the gay agenda" ...

So, you would think that the conservatives breeding like rabbits would produce ... more conservatives ...

but then, the country is really more to the left than the Repugs try to portray it ...

go figure ...

39. since they're Nazis, they think everything is genetic
they LIKE science when it goes with their views: for example, The Bell Curve, or "studies" proving that the poor are worthless
they especially like technology that disgusts "pansy" humanities folks and environmentalists: white phosphorus, Unit 731, fertilizer, GMOs, France-sized disks to orbit the Earth, etc. They'll only denounce science if they can't benefit mentally or physically from it.
if it's instrumentalist and helps whip humans and animals into shape they love it; too bad it's under severe criticism from scientists and relentless demolition from the humanities
but if something threatens to dethrone the Lord of Earth, Anointed by God and Ruling by Technology, look out...

And in the court of public opinion, as testified by the huge numbers of people who show up at the Museum, the creationists are winning, and the scientists are losing.

You need to go with a very fundamentalist, very unimaginative, very uneducated person. I doubt that you have anyone like that in your life at present; maybe there's a kiosk near the museum where you can rent one.

Edited on Thu Jul-02-09 07:53 AM by mwb970
Most of the people who don’t understand science on this board (several who have already rung in) have taken it upon themselves to define who is or isn’t “Christian.”

Their definition of “Christian” is “anyone who agrees with me” and “atheist” is “anyone who does not agree with me.”

It is hubris (the greatest sin) at the highest possible level.

The sentiment in this post could just as well be from the DU thread. But, most of the FR posts are not this level-headed. They tend to be either belligerent screeds or sappy, soppy religious pieties.

I'm still waiting for the inevitable reference to Obama's birth certificate, but I'm not even halfway through the thread yet. Stand by.

30. Embarassing indeed
A few years ago I went to the national museum of New Zealand, which had just opened up a multimillion dollar exhibit on evolution (an especially interesting topic on an island nation). I remember telling my husband that the Smithsonian would never be able to create even a panelboard on evolution without the fundangelicals petitioning Congress to pull funding for the museum.

"Lisa Park of the University of Akron cried at one point as she walked a hallway full of flashing images of war, famine and natural disasters which the museum blames on belief in evolution."

This is just embarrassing. But it can't possibly get any worse, right??

"The museum argues that the fossil record has been misinterpreted and that Tyrannosaurus rex was a vegetarian before Adam and Eve bit into that sin-inducing apple."
