Why do adults bring their children to Las Vegas?
Aren't there more appropriate places for a family vacation?

6. Now that's a good idea.
Have you ever taken a good look at the adult folks who hang out up on the second level of the casino there, with the kids' games and arcade? It's not pretty.

21. decades ago, dad had a business meeting in las vegas and took us as family vacation
stayed at circus circus. was great. pool, entertainment and we were old enough to be able to leave mom in hotel room obsessively watching the watergate hearings, ranting and raving and we had the freedom to play and entertained.

we didnt take many vacations but that was one of the best.

3. Las Vegas has been promoting itself as a family destination for some time.
Most of the major hotels have day care and special activities for the kids. Not to mention the whole Disneyland aspect of the newer hotels.

43. They regretted that "plan" almost as soon as they started it
The whole "idea" of Vegas has always been a place for the grownups to play hooky, have fun, and do it without the "family thing".

Vegas lost a LOT of their "regulars" when they started tripping over kids everywhere, and vegas is not a "safe" place for unattended kids of any age.

Casinos don't allow them, for obvious reasons. Childcare in hotels is costly, and there are plenty of places that are truly family-friendly, so why not just go there with the kids, and then go to Vegas without the kids.

We go once a year, and accidentally took our kids one time..what a FIASCO. It cost us more than it would have to have hired someone to come to our house & stay with them, AND take them to Disneyland while we were gone..:)..and No one had much fun. ( I have to go, since I'm the tournament organizer, and they begged us to come along)

I've never understood it- but then I'm not a cruise ship, luxury hotel, vacation = sitting on my ass eating shrimp and feeling pampered kind of guy.

24. Okay. I'll accept that.
But, how do the parents gamble?

It seems to me that they spend all their time at the pool, watching scantily clad people getting drunk. I wouldn't want my kids exposed to that.

What, does one parent stay in the room while the other gambles? And they switch off?

AND, we have won some cash on this trip. So, sometimes gambing is good. Not to mention the free drinkies.

:toast:

16. Las Vegas is neatly packaged sin
for suburban churchgoers. It's one of the few places they can take the kids that are also adult friendly, with places to drop the kids off while Mom and Dad play. There are also venues that are extremely kid friendly.

It's a lot more fun for adults without the kids, of course, but there is no rule that says you have to put bourbon in their bottles if you have to drag them along.

19. I have heard Vegas is an awsome place for kids.
That is because Vegas goes completely out of its way to make the place awesome for kids. If the kids are happy and occupied they will not go find dad and drag him out of the casino. And if they have a blast they will whine to come back next year. It is a good business plan that works.

There are family things to do in Vegas and once the kiddies are tucked in bed, mommy and daddy can get some serious gambling in.

32. So, adults should leave their kids in the beds alone?
You didn't really mean that....

Why can't parents leave their little darlings at home with friends or relatives?

I'm sorry, but casinos and drunken rages are not the place for kids.

I know that I will be slamme; it's just my personal opinion.

35. I have no idea what they do. I have seen family groups with grandmas
and teenagers in tow. Maybe they take turns staying with the kids. I don't have kids so I don't have the problem, but I wouldn't doubt, Vegas being Vegas, has services to fit all niches and perhaps baby sitting services is one of them. Also, no one under eighteen or twenty-one (can't remember the cut off age) is allowed on the Casino floors. There is plenty of security so any drunken rages would be contained by some burley guys dressed like Roman centurions (at Ceasar's Palace anyway) very quickly.

53. Your statement is false. Children aren't allowed in gaming areas.
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 03:08 PM by TexasObserver
This whole thread is about your personal pet peeve. Obviously, parents know their children and their standards better than you. They bring them to Las Vegas because, unlike you, they know the family will have a good time.

It appears that your opinion is based solely upon what you would do, which is not a very good standard, since Las Vegas has been marketing to families for two decades. You're the one out of step, not those bringing their kids.

29. We used to stay at the Thunderbird
I remember eating from massive buffets, how the lights on the strip made it look like daytime @ night and The Silver Slipper sign made me think I was in fairyland. When I was a teen, I got to see some incredible performers like Peggy Lee, Bill Cosby and B.B. King. We saw Bob Newhart having breakfast when we ate at the Frontier. Our family jaunts to Vegas were some of our best vacations.

The time we spent in Vegas was the most relaxing part of our vacation. The parents went out an played low end slot machines while my sister and I swam in the pool and watched movies. At night we'd all go to a show. It was the only time we could get the parents out of our hair!

All this was before the amusement parkification.

Edited to add: Our hotel was the Frontier!

38. Living in Las Vegas
I live here and love, love it. Just the idea that about three or four miles from where I live there are bright lights, entertainment and great food makes me feel good. Whenever, I travel to different cities and states they all seem boring and dull (excepting Los Angeles). Having said that, I can tell you that the only time we go to the Strip is to eat at one of the great restaurants and then we get to go back to our comfy and beautiful home. I love Mix on top (64 floors) of Mandalay Bay----the view is breathtaking. I also have to admit that I am a true desert rat and love the endless blue skies and mountains. Why other people come here is a true mystery to most Las Vegans. Keep coming though we like having you.
