Weekend Highlights
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next week marks the anniversary of both the beginning and end of the Civil War. This weekend, Book TV features two authors with books about the conflict:
James McPherson, This Mighty Scourge: Perspectives on the Civil War
This book is a collection of 16 essays written by McPherson, a professor of history at Princeton. The topics he discusses are wide ranging, including reasons why the war started, the motivations of the leaders on both sides, and why the war ended the way it did. (Saturday 2 PM, Sunday 7 PM, Monday 2 AM ET)
William Marvel, Mr. Lincoln Goes to War
Marvel takes a new look at the Civil War and faults both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis for pushing the country into open military conflict. He accuses President Lincoln of having an unimaginative approach to solving the secession crisis and infringing on the constitutional rights of Northern civilians once the fighting began.
(Saturday 3 PM, Sunday 8 PM, Monday 3 AM ET)
Stephen Flynn, The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation
Flynn describes America's vulnerability to terrorist attacks and natural disasters. He claims the country is unprepared to respond to bioterrorism, epidemics, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. (Sunday 10:30 AM, Monday 12 PM ET)
Allan Brandt, The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, And Deadly Persistence Of The Product That Defined America
Brandt documents the history of the cigarette, a product that has played a prominent social and political role in the U.S. From the fields of agriculture, medicine, and mass marketing to the halls of Congress, the cigarette has become a greatly debated part of the lives of smokers and non-smokers alike. (Saturday 11 PM ET)
4. Thanks for that!
I caught 1/2 of that program last sunday afternoon and was hoping it would repeat. I'm gonna go home and set my Tivo so I'll catch the whole thing.
I really enjoyed it. He displays a levity of thought that you just don't find in American discourse these days, sadly.
60. Alexander Cockburn is smoking crack!
I saw most of the interview and I agree that Cockburn is bright, articulate and very well read. Nonetheless, someone called in and asked him about Gore and global warming. Alexander replied to the effect that climate change is a scam used to promote nuclear power!?
Ironically, he is intellectually closer to James Inhofe on this issue than a rationale. intelligent individual. So I left the show feeling that Cockburn is decidedly weird, not to mention anti-scientific on the most critical issue of our time.
Collateral Damage: How High-Stakes Testing Corrupts America's Schools
David Berliner
From Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC, David Berliner argues that high-stakes testing, mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act, compromises education. In his book, "Collateral Damage," Mr. Berliner writes that the pressures of high-stakes testing lead to corruption -- increased cheating among both teachers and students -- and deprive students of a well-rounded education.
David Berliner is an education professor at Arizona State University in Tempe. "Collateral Damage" is co-authored by Sharon Nichols, who teaches at the University of Texas in San Antonio.
The Averaged American: Surveys, Citizens, and the Making of a Mass Public
Sarah Igo
In "The Averaged American," history professor Sarah Igo argues that opinion polls, sex surveys, and consumer research are a 20th-century innovation that changed the way Americans think about themselves. Studies such as the Gallup Poll and the Kinsey Reports prompted Americans to begin defining themselves and their nation in terms of majority opinion and mainstream beliefs.
Sarah Igo is a history professor at the University of Pennsylvania where she is a member of the Graduate Group in the History and Sociology of Science. She is also part of an interdisciplinary faculty group at Harvard University dedicated to rethinking American education.
74. Very Impressive Short Book
What happens to history, to every great event that ever happened in the world, once it recedes far enough back that there was no one to tell it anymore, that it now belongs before the age of living witnesses, and has now faded back to dust, where only papers and pictures refer to it? When there was no one to ask anymore, "What was it like?," will you bother to read hundreds of pages of book after book, to try to track down one answer to one question, you wish someone could just tell you about, from life? What happens to it when you don't bother? This is why this book was written specifically, and what distinguished it. It is a first-rate, historically accurate telling of the First World War by an accomplished historian, and it is about 150 pages long, total. It was written as a basic introduction to the huge and neverending topic, to "give them the basic essentials about the First World War, if that was the only book about it they were ever going to read." This is a necessary thing, to give people short but good versions of histories, so that we all don't have to read tomes on every single topic, to learn anything.
There was a lot of atmosphere to this C-SPAN program, which was a rerun of "Booknotes," (with a transcript available at Booknotes,org), with the events of the War very well described and clear. It told how the War started, the familiar story of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand by a Serb terrorist, seeking freedom from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, how that became a pretext for trying to crush the Serbs, how then other countries joined, some with nothing to do with the original situation, declaring war on unrelated enemies as it escalated nightmarishly. The map of Europe after the War, very different from the one before it, as huge multinational Empires became independent countries. There was much discussion of battles, casualty numbers, sequences of events, (World War I went from 1914-1918, and the U.S. joined it Spring of 1917, for example), and descriptions of the relative strengths of armies, equipment used, etc., all expected for a decent history, but there was a sense of understanding of the period and the issues by the author, too. I got more of a sense of the relationship of these countries to each other, why things escalated and exploded, and the larger, tragic sense of history. Some of the descriptions of the hated Kaiser Bill, for example--stupid, arrogant, incompetent, disastrous for Germany and the world--reminded me eerily of Bush and Cheney today, although the comparison wasn't made.
At the beginning of World War I, most Americans were neutral and did not want us entering the war. What changed it was the reporting, hyped-up but real, of German atrocities against citizens, and the bombing of several U.S. ships bringing supplies to Europe, by Germany. (Although it was not mentioned on the program, I was reminded of the great anti-war books, movies and songs that came from this era: "All Quiet on the Western Front," "The Big Parade," the song "I Didn't Raise My Boy to be a Soldier" which was a hit when sales were measured by sheet music sold, etc.) Despite years of suffering and hardship by both fighting forces and the countries where the war was fought--this was for example the beginning of waves of refugees fleeing their homes for other lands, and the organization of groups giving food and other necessities to thousands of people now destitute because of the effect of the war on society and the economy. There was great social upheaval during and after the War, as there always is, and a lot of social progress is actually the result of this rage and dislocation; this was talked about, too.
There was also another strange trend begun with World War I, and that was the use of propaganda to encourage citizens to support the war effort, join and fight, and generally get all mindlessly roused against the enemy. The historical perspective given on this was that until this era roughly, the population was cut out of the process, oppressed and overworked, and so the rich oligarchs conquered lands and their enemies with the Nation's treasury and with professional armies, at their will and with little attention from the lowly citizens, keeping everything taken by war. Now, in the modern world, the citizens had to get roused and participate themselves, as they were now a factor. This showed itself as the propaganda of the First World War, beginning as "glorious adventure," etc., and ending bitterly, and with a belief that all good had gone out of the world. The only real thing keeping them going was the real feeling that they had to win, and stop Germany. Many very perceptive things on this order were explained, and it was really interesting and well told.
There was a lively sense to the author's descriptions of things, besides the sound historical knowledge; this seems like a really good book to get if you want to learn about World War I, but only read a short book.
17. BTV Bus: Jonathan Kozol, "The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America
From Publishers Weekly
Public school resegregation is a "national horror hidden in plain view," writes former educator turned public education activist Kozol (Savage Inequalities, Amazing Grace). Kozol visited 60 schools in 11 states over a five-year period and finds, despite the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, many schools serving black and Hispanic children are spiraling backward to the pre-Brown era. These schools lack the basics: clean classrooms, hallways and restrooms; up-to-date books in good condition; and appropriate laboratory supplies. Teachers and administrators eschew creative coursework for rote learning to meet testing and accountability mandates, thereby "embracing a pedagogy of direct command and absolute control" usually found in "penal institutions and drug rehabilitation programs." As always, Kozol presents sharp and poignant portraits of the indignities vulnerable individuals endure. "You have all the things and we do not have all the things," one eight-year-old Bronx boy wrote the author. In another revealing exchange, a cynical high school student tells his classmate, a young woman with college ambitions who was forced into hair braiding and sewing classes, "You're ghetto-so you sew." Kozol discovers widespread acceptance for the notion that "schools in ghettoized communities must settle for a different set of academic and career goals" than schools serving middle-and upper-class children. Kozol tempers this gloom with hopeful interactions between energetic teachers and receptive children in schools where all is not lost. But these "treasured places" don't hide the fact, Kozol argues, that school segregation is still the rule for poor minorities, or that Kozol, and the like-minded politicians, educators and advocates he seeks out, believe a new civil rights movement will be necessary to eradicate it.
$39 bucks at Frys 3 years ago, and it has saved my weekends from the horrible Teenmonsters!
44. Thank you so much for this weekly service!
I do consult this every week and often I either watch programs or getting them off the C-SPAN site as a result of your prodigious efforts. (Afforded me a chance to spend three hours with Cockburn earlier this week while washing dishes and cooking.) Thanks, kick, recommend, and karma points to you!
Rise and shine, come get your Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and fancy-schmancy barista drinks.
75. Did you accuse the newbies of being freeps?
That's always good to bring 'em down a notch.
I saw later that there was big trouble around helderheid, and that you were there for most of it, and I figured that's what you were up to.
I wrote Hh, and said I'd sue her if she didn't come back.
Just kidding. I just asked her to come back.
It's been a tough week for lots of folks. Seriously.
70. No, it's not just you.
Let's have a drink. :-)
The weather doesn't help, it's dreary here.
I think I'm gonna nap soon. Meet me in dreamland, Vivala?
72. Hey -- I just got back from a great salmon lunch that the kid took me to
in a little funny place with black walls and display cases mounted on pedestals for tables. I want one.
Every time I go out with the kid, I regret 0 population growth. :)
Okay, paying attention now.
But mostly so I could have someone to lord it over.;-)
