Weekend Highlights
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next week marks the anniversary of both the beginning and end of the Civil War. This weekend, Book TV features two authors with books about the conflict:
James McPherson, This Mighty Scourge: Perspectives on the Civil War
This book is a collection of 16 essays written by McPherson, a professor of history at Princeton. The topics he discusses are wide ranging, including reasons why the war started, the motivations of the leaders on both sides, and why the war ended the way it did. (Saturday 2 PM, Sunday 7 PM, Monday 2 AM ET)
William Marvel, Mr. Lincoln Goes to War
Marvel takes a new look at the Civil War and faults both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis for pushing the country into open military conflict. He accuses President Lincoln of having an unimaginative approach to solving the secession crisis and infringing on the constitutional rights of Northern civilians once the fighting began.
(Saturday 3 PM, Sunday 8 PM, Monday 3 AM ET)
Stephen Flynn, The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation
Flynn describes America's vulnerability to terrorist attacks and natural disasters. He claims the country is unprepared to respond to bioterrorism, epidemics, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. (Sunday 10:30 AM, Monday 12 PM ET)
Allan Brandt, The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, And Deadly Persistence Of The Product That Defined America
Brandt documents the history of the cigarette, a product that has played a prominent social and political role in the U.S. From the fields of agriculture, medicine, and mass marketing to the halls of Congress, the cigarette has become a greatly debated part of the lives of smokers and non-smokers alike. (Saturday 11 PM ET)
Times Books American Presidents Series
Times Books, an imprint of Henry Holt and Company, is publishing short biographies of all 43 American presidents, with a special emphasis on each man's time in office. The series was developed by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., who was the general editor until his death in February 2007. Book TV interviewed three of the biographers who have contributed to the series, as well as Paul Golob, the Editorial Director of Times Books.
(Saturday 7 PM, Sunday 10 PM ET)
Presidential Biography Panel with David Greenberg, Calvin Coolidge, Ira Rutkow, James Garfield, and Sean Wilentz, Andrew Jackson
The talk about these three presidential biographies is moderated by Hillel Italie of the Associated Press. The books are part of Times Books American Presidents series. (Saturday 7:30 PM, Sunday 10:25 PM ET)
