Pitchman Billy Mays has died
No link yet, just on MSNBC. He was found dead by his wife. Apparently he was part of an airline incident in Tampa recently.

2. Here is a link on the airline incident
TAMPA — A U.S. Airways jet safely landed at Tampa International Airport this afternoon despite the fact that one of its front tires blew out.

Paramedics went to the west runway just before 3 p.m. after getting reports that a 737 aircraft was having problems landing.

No one was injured, including the one celebrity on board: infomercial king Billy Mays, of Odessa, said Tampa Airport Authority spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan.

Billy Mays -- 'I Got a Hard Head'

Pitchman Billy Mays Found Dead
Posted Jun 28th 2009 11:50AM by TMZ Staff

TMZ has confirmed TV pitchman Billy Mays was found dead today in his home in Tampa, Florida early this morning.

According to the Tampa PD, the 50-year-old TV pitchman was found unresponsive by his wife Deborah at 7:45 AM.

TMZ has learned Mays' body has already been removed from his home.

Mays had just returned from Philadelphia, where he shot a new OxiClean commercial. He was a passenger aboard a plane that suffered a blown front tire upon landing. He told a local TV station, "All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We're told Mays was at his home around 6:00 PM last night, and according to a source Mays was "acting fine and normal ... he was talking business with his father-in-law."

According to cops, there are no signs of forced entry to the residence and no foul play is suspected.

The Medical Examiner's office is expected to complete the autopsy by tomorrow afternoon. Billy was due to have his third hip replacement surgery on Monday.

Billy's wife Deborah just released the following statement: "Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times."

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman released a statement Sunday that reads, "Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth. Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal andcompassionate friend."

Story developing ...

55. You prove my point
The definitions of celebrity are fluid and arbitrary. Ed McMahon was a pitchman too, he just had a longer career than Mays. In fact, Michael Jackson was a pitchman - of albums and videos. Farrah pitched pin-up posters (in a pinch). If you want to haggle all day over who is or who is not a "superstar" - go ahead, but that does not prove that the "3's" idea holds any water. The fact is, Mays was widely well-known, and that is the base line of celebrity in America: You don't have to be famous for any particular accomplishment - you just have to be famous.

128. I thought the same thing about Billy Mays. I think it's a shame the airline is blaming his death...
...on Mays not wearing a seat belt. The man was hit in the head by unsecured "things" from overhead.

He said, "All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

All the airline cares about is a lawsuit.

Famed TV pitchman Billy Mays hits NYC for look-alike contest

BY Larry Mcshane
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Saturday, June 13th 2009, 4:00 AM

Oxy Clean pitchman Billy Mays hung out in Times Square on Friday, where he was easily recognized by locals and tourists alike.

For Billy Mays, life's a pitch.

The ubiquitous TV salesman with the deep black beard and deeper bass voice hit Manhattan Friday, greeting fans in Times Square.

"You look different in person!" said excited tourist Karen Klasen of Houston.

"How?" joked Mays. "Taller and thinner?"

The 50-year-old unparalleled pitchman was in the city for a look-alike contest, held Saturday and Sunday at Madison Square Park.

Of course I was thrilled about his TV show--I can't listen to him for more than ten seconds, so he's given a whole hour.

And now that voice will be stilled forever? One guilt trip, coming right up!

The paper printed his home address? So much for his wife's request to respect his privacy

98. Now I'm going to worry about Ron Popeil, inventor and pitchman
Owner of Ronco and inventor of all kinds of useful things:
* Chop-O-Matic hand food processor. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to show you the greatest kitchen appliance ever made... All your onions chopped to perfection without shedding a single tear."
* Dial-O-Matic, successor to the Veg-O-Matic. "Slice a tomato so thin it only has one side."
* Popeil Pocket Fisherman. "The biggest fishing invention since the hook...and still only $19.95!" (According to the program Biography, the original product was the invention of Popeil's father and only marketed by Ronco, but as of 2006, Popeil had introduced a redesigned version of the product.)<3>
* Mr. Microphone, a short-range hand-held radio transmitter that broadcast over FM radios. A convertible rolls up to a curb and an enthusiastic young man shouts out "Hey, good looking, I'll be back to pick you up later!" followed by the pitch "Broadcast your voice on any FM radio!!!"
* Inside-The-Shell Egg Scrambler. "Gets rid of those slimy egg whites in your scrambled eggs." Popeil has said the inspiration for this product was his lifelong revulsion toward incompletely blended scrambled eggs.
* Six Star 20-Piece Cutlery Set.
* Solid Flavor Injector. This product accompanied the Showtime rotisserie grill and was used to inject solid ingredients into meat or other foods. A similar product, called the Liquid Flavor Injector, allowed for the injecting of liquid ingredients into meat (e.g., lime juice into chicken).
* GLH-9 Hair in a Can Spray (Great Looking Hair Formula #9).
* Drain Buster.
* Smokeless Ashtray - "Does cigar and cigarette smoke irritate your eyes?" Commercials showed this device drawing smoke from burning cigarettes back into the ashtray itself.
* Electric Food Dehydrator - "Instead of giving kids candy, give them apple snacks or banana chips. And it's great if you're a hunter, fisherman, backpacker, or camper. Makes beef jerky for around $3 a pound, and you know what went in it, because you made it yourself!"
* Ronco Popeil Automatic Pasta Maker.
* Showtime Rotisserie, a small rotisserie oven designed for cooking smaller sized portions of meat such as whole chicken and lamb. "Set it, and forget it!"
* The Cap Snaffler - "Snaffles caps off any size jug, bottle, or jar… and it really, really works."
* The Showtime Six Star Plus 25 Knife Set and the Solid Flavor Injector.

Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 10:54 AM by FarPoint
I just heard this on MSNBC; no link available; age 51. You know, the black bearded guy for Oxy-clean etc......

He was also a passenger on the flight that had a hard landing yesterday in Tampa where the nose bounced....No cause of death identified but sometimes the intense adrenalin rush can cause a delayed heart attch response....maybe????

He was recently on the Tonight Show too.discussion similarities to Ed McMahon..........now they have more in common.

http://www.examiner.com/x-14464-Shop-at-Home-Examiner~y2009m6d26-PitchMen-Billie-Mays-and-Anthony-Sullivan-on-The-Tonight-Show

snip>

Billy Mays has become an iconic television personality with quite the following. He discussed his start 27 years ago with the same company that Ed McMahon worked for when they used to pitch products on the boardwalk. It was a timely remembrance of the former Tonight Show star that had passed away earlier that day. Billy remembers him as one of the best pitchmen ever.

TAMPA — Billy Mays, the TV pitchman whose trademark voice helped sell everything from cleaning supplies to baking soda, was found dead this morning by his wife at his Tampa home. No cause of death has been reported and no foul play is suspected, according to Tampa police.

I bet it turns out to be a prescription drug overdose, just like MJ.

Some day someone in power will suggest that maybe we should REALLY control these types of narcotics instead of docs handing them out like candy.

How do we ensure that people who really need pain meds get adequate access to them while simultaneously keeping those who do not need them from obtaining them for other purposes?

Honestly, I don't think it's a solvable problem.

72. Track every single pill from the factory to the patient.
Fix the antiquated prescription system (already being done).

Punish doctors who prescribe them too often.

And for gawd's sake, no more free samples.

Problem is, all these ideas would hurt the manufacturer's bottom line. Can't have that!

76. Who is to judge the doctors who prescribe "too often"?
Pain management in the USA is already a major problem for a lot of people, my ex wife had a great deal of pain from a couple of herniated discs and she never could get any pain meds, rather they gave her Xanax, which we described as an "I don't care" pill.

Do we *really* want to hand more power to the DEA?

80. I had this problem after extensive abdominal surgery. My surgeon was "sure" that
everybody gets addicted to painkillers (mine was Vicoden) after such a long siege as I had. The problem was that I don't get addicted to painkillers. I am not addicted to anything. I quit smoking 22 years ago without one pang (after smoking for over 15 years). I have had other surgeries where I have had to take Vicoden and have only needed them for pain.

However, I have noticed that the issue of pain management is becoming more discussed nowadays. Other docs are afraid that the law will come after them so they give patients a hard time. It's not fair. I finally had a visiting nurse who advocated for me with the drs office and I got my meds...

Much like one of the side effects of Valium is anxiety.

Drugs that mask symptoms, and sensitize the body on withdrawal, is part of the problem.

123. OK no problem. In my case, tho, I was still healing from the surgery.
I had developed scar tissue after an elective surgery (monumentally bad luck my doc said). Then another complication requiring a 3rd surgery. I lost enough of "digestive material" in the small intestine that I now have to be sure I am getting a highly nutritious diet (the only good thing is that I'll never be fat as I don't absorb so many calories). So you can imagine how long that takes to heal completely. Once that happened I didn't need anything. The only problem I had was what to do with the leftover pills...I finally left them with my doc and asked if she would dispose of them properly (I knew I wasn't supposed to flush them down the toilet or put them in the garbage).

102. Huff Post quoted Mays saying he was hit on the head by things falling from the plane ceiling, but..
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 02:25 PM by DeschutesRiver
was okay because he has a hard head. He sounded like he was trying to be cheerful and make light of the plane thing.

There was also a mention that he'd said he wasn't feeling well when he went to bed last night, after that plane incident, so I am wondering if this was a delayed reaction from whatever stuff he mentioned hit his head. Reminds me of how well Nastasha Richardson thought she was after she fell and hit her head, and then bam, she was dead shortly after that.

I know these head injuries that kill like this are not common, but dang, seems like I am seeing it a bit more right now (can't recall the others I've seen at the moment).

ETA: and he never really drove me all that crazy, kind of got used to seeing him pitch things. And OxyClean really does do what he says it does. Plus, I too liked that show Pitchmen, at least the few times I watched it. He didn't seem like a bad guy (unlike the Sham Wow beat-up-hookers guy); just a harmless dude who found something he was really good at doing, and just settled down and pounded out a living doing it.

I am surprised that Billy was 50; I honestly thought he was much older than that, probably because he started shoe blacking his hair like the really old guys do.

85. TMZ had this...
The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays -- claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn't wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.

Here's what we know -- Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."

A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.

Billy posted about it last on his Twitter last night, saying, "Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."
