I'm re-reading "Love Always" by Ann Beattie, published in 1985. On my homebound commute today I read these sentences:

Nicole flipped through the magazine. Brooke Shields with Michael Jackson. That was about as convincing as Liberace with Farrah Fawcett.

No lie.

3. It would almost be worth trying to send a correspondence to Mrs. Beattie.
I'm assuming she's still alive anyways.... But it would be interesting to see what her thoughts are on all this given what she wrote way back then.

Pretty freaky.

4. But wait--there's more
"(This) is a secret house where I rendevous with Michael Jackson."
"I know you're putting me on...he's on tour."
"His double is on tour. Michael Jackson is upstairs in the bathtub."

"You ever met Brooke Shields?"
"Sure. We're with the same agency...You know, there's nothing between her and Michael Jackson."
"I read where there's nothing between Michael Jackson and anybody."
"Yeah. I think he's messed up."
"You know Michael Jackson?"
"Not very well."
"Yeah? You've met him?"
"A couple of times. He's real reclusive and everything...He's really a great performer and all, though."

5. Isn't it funny how coincidence leads us to read strangely appropriate things at the oddest times?
Here's a book oddity that happened to me. At the recommendation of an aunt who is actually the widow of one of my dad's brothers--hence she shares my last name--I read a novel that happened to have a minor character in it with our shared surname, which is pretty rare.

A while into it, I found another character, who so happened to have the same first name, again rare, as my mother. (Two different ethnicities, two characters from different countries.)

So, I realized, this novel is the only novel on the planet, most likely, that contains my mother's first and last married name within its text. One character has her first name, one character has the last name she died with.

It's a really good novel, too.

Not quite the same as when you find yourself reading a book that happens to have a strangely prophetic or coincidental reference in it to current events (and that's happened to me too), but just as bizarre in its own way.
