Does anyone not 'tweet'? I don't, and have no clue
how to do so. And I don't have a mobile phone either.

3. I'm a newcomer to it, was persuaded by events in Iran
when CNN failed me last weekend.

I do it old school, in my web browser, without any other fancy schmancy 3rd party apps. I'm a minimalist.

If you want to get a feel for it, go here:

http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23demund

and read what a few of us were doing for the hour or so while DU was down earlier

I'm not one of those who posts "news" of my breakfast choice or latest bowel movement. I update infrequently it would appear, compared to most Facebook users. But I check it out every day. Not all technology is bad just because it exists.

18 year old microwave. Toast actually may be older - I got it from my family. I keep it unplugged when not in use (actually, this should be done with all toasters; they are one of the biggest sources of kitchen fires).

She calls at least once a day mostly just to talk. Usually she wants to talk to her grandmother but sometimes she wants to come over and ride one of the horses.

She is the only person I know who can hold the reins in one hand and a cell phone in the other.

She became a mommy last year and she can carry on a phone conversation while she is changing the baby's diaper.

It is sorta interesting, but I still am novice.

Just read a bit on the Iranian news and many are suggesting people set their location at Tehran and their time zone as GMT + 3 hours. Say it will help protect Iranian tweeters from security as it creates a bottleneck for them to check out or something. If anyone could explain to old Luddite like me and let me know if it really is a help to the Iranians trying to get news out, it would be appreciated.

my cell to accept tweets. I don't want to waste them on the many people who are tweeting at this time. I'd probably have to cut down on the number of persons I "follow" if I set the phone up to accept tweets. I'm not on an unlimited text plan. If I was, I wouldn't care how many tweets I got.

There are a bunch of DUers there.

But my favorite thing about it is the breaking news. Most reporters send out tweets. I signed up for the local folks I saw there and within a few days, we had a tornado watch one night. I got better info from a local reporter who was following the storm than I was getting from the TV weather station. I was then hooked on Twitter.

Do it! http://twitter.com/

44. Here I want to make a point about Twitter
The whole debate about it is silly and I'm not going to go down that road, because I've been on both sides, I see both sides, but I have come to terms with where it fits in my life.

The situation in Iran brought it into view for me, that's all.

The fundamental significance of Twitter is that you can access it easily via a cell phone, and that it has a sufficiently large audience to have reached critical mass so that it can be relevent.

As with this past week in Iran.

Think about what you would do if, for whatever reason, your government decided to "turn off" the Internet. That is, to block all Americans (or whichever government controls the net where you, whoever you are, live) from all Internet access.

And further, let's say they decided to shut down all cable TV broadcasts as well.

But you have your cell phone.

Would you know what to do with it so you could 1) get information out and 2) gather information?

I wouldn't. I don't even know how to use texting on a cell phone! But I'm starting to think about it, because it's just one of those things, like earthquake preparedness, where it's better to know in advance than to wait for an emergency and wish that you had learned how before.

As a matter of fact, when the next Big One hits in California, we'll learn very quickly whether Twitter turned out to be useful to anyone. But before that happens, I'm going to get up to speed on how to use it.

Or, as I mention, it could also apply to an emergency where power is down. Like an earthquake.

Do you realize how many people in Iran are completely unaware of what has been happening in Tehran this past week?

88. Understood. Twitter is a 'lick it & stick it' product grafted onto the profile...
of it's user base duh! well...not you but, "duh!" in general either way it's all about advertising, product placement (DU can't stop talking about it) & commercialization and the focus data has been *in* for years & years; this is part of what drives the ever-quicker Ad moment-cha-ching!! - I think Japan has their's down to 2-3 secs...seconds< "Bonsai!!" and that's it........but what was it? There were some noodles, a rice paper kite, a tea cup and a pink Pokemon with a purple hat but that was it - Very Quick, approaching the attention span of a fruit fly if while some miles back still - Twitter

I had to hire a 9-year-old to show me the way around the new cable box! Having barely gotten comfortable with XP on my computer, when I had to upgrade to a machine with larger capacity I had to get Vista. Groan. No way I'm taking on anything else 'tekky.' Criminy, I remember when felt-tip markers were the newest thing - they squeaked and stunk, but we just HAD to have them in order to make sure our messages would be seen. Cave paintings I get, electronics not so much.

I have texted about 3 times. I was laughed at because I did not use shortened words. I still use the minimum features of my small digital camera. I like the face to face interaction of looking at a person while I speak to them. So.....why am I on the computer? LOL.

113. No, it didn't 'create' anything in Iran, it aided in sharing with the
world what was going on there when most other forms of communication were cut off by the government.

That in itself is intriguing and has proved to give Twitter a good reason for its existence.
