Portugal to take 2 or 3 Guantanamo detainees

Jun 21st, 2009 | LISBON, Portugal -- The Portuguese foreign minister says his country will take in two or three Guantanamo Bay detainees once they are released by the U.S. detention camp.

Foreign Minister Luis Amado told state broadcaster RTP that "we now have to set in motion the internal procedures necessary to proceed with their reception."

He is quoted on RTP's Web site Sunday as saying the government is working out legal issues involved in bringing the former prisoners to Portugal.

Amado had urged other EU member states in December to take in Guantanamo detainees who could not return to their home countries.
