Police: Woman skinned puppy to make belt

MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma (AP) — A 23-year-old woman who got a friend to kill her Jack Russell terrier was charged with skinning the puppy to make a belt out of its hide.
Krystal Lynn Lewis and Austin Michael Mullins, 26, were being held Friday in the Muskogee County jail on $25,000 bail each. They were charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals.

A Muskogee County judge ordered a mental competency hearing for Lewis.

Lewis wanted the puppy, named Poplin, killed because it was a gift from a female ex-lover with whom she doesn't get along, said Muskogee County sheriff's deputy George Roberson.

Roberson said Mullins shot the terrier 10 times with a .22-caliber pistol. Lewis skinned the animal at her apartment and nailed the hide to a board.

6. Sick on the surface, but how does a dog differ from a mink...or a chinchilla...or a cow?
The animal wasn't tortured, it was killed and made into a piece of clothing.

We do that every day.

13. Because in our culture, one animal is not a substitute for another
We breed and raise cattle for their meat, milk and hides. Dogs, on the other hand are bred and raised as human companions.

I know it's an abitrary difference, but cultural and societal practices and norms are very powerful.

Would you eat dog meat? Would you keep a keep a chicken for a pet? Not likely, because that's not the purpose we've collectively decided for them.

And, I don't eat mink or chinchilla. Neither do I wear their skins. These fuckers didn't shoot the dog to eat it, and they shot it 10 times! How do you know they didn't "torture" it? If the first shot didn't kill it, they tortured it.

These are sick bastards.

16. most people think you're supposed to shoot between the eyes
that is incorrect and cruel. At best it blows a hole in the sinuses, and leaves the animal thrashing in bloody, blinded agony. My guess is that's what they tried, to leave the poor puppy's "pelt" intact. Fuckheads. Hope they throw the book at them, ten times over.

There is a correct procedure for euthanasia by bullet. I won't post it here. Knowledgeable livestock owners generally know what it is. And know that between the eyes is a disaster.

Does this mean that livestock animals that require multiple bolts/cuts/whatnot to be killed have been tortured?

54. I have, yes.
And I applaud Sen. Pete Fitzgerald for pushing the Farm Bill resolution (which Shrub signed) in the Senate, despite the fact that he's an asshole Republican.

But there are still exemptions for kosher/halal slaughter, and there are still shoulder-shrugging "our hands are tied" failures in enforcement by the USDA, and there are still countless first-hand reports by slaughterhouse workers of gross failures to kill livestock in a single blow--whether conscious or not beforehand.

So, since we know that <100% of livestock is slaughtered with a single stroke/bolt/hammerblow, how are those cases not torture?

(Again, I'm not flaming or trolling you. I just honestly wonder about the ethical calculus used by other people when it comes to animal rights/welfare.)

58. The Humane Slaughter Act exempts chickens, for starters.
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 01:44 PM by superduperfarleft
Chickens are pretty much tortured from the day they're born to the day they die. As far as the HSA goes, they're not considered animals.

It also doesn't cover castration of bulls without anesthetic, branding, or all manner of incredibly painful, cruel things that are done to "food animals."

If you want to be a cuddlytarian and get all outraged about a dog (and I'm not at all defending what these creeps did) while ignoring the MILLIONS of animals cruelly slaughtered for your food and clothing, that's fine. Just be a bit more honest about it.

I do 100 to 150 calves every year. Takes less than 30 seconds with a good crew. They are up and back with momma immediately.

I hope I don't have to point out that livestock are not the same as humans in terms of pain/nerve receptors on either their dorsal surfaces or testicular areas?

Ever see a cow die of a horrible disease? Ever see a chicken caught by a fox? Talk about torture!

Do you know what overpopulation of the species does to deer? Do you know what happens to the crab population when there are too many rockfish?

The circle of life needs balance. Humans can help with that. I don't want to eat brown beans the rest of my life to get the needed protein in my diet.

96. Yes, it was nothing but cruel.
I was responding to something other than the cruelty of the original post.

When I was a child we got all the strays that were dumped in area. At one time we had 13 cats and 12 dogs. There was no such thing as a humane shelter. You only used the vet for livestock. We could not keep that many animals. It broke our hearts to get rid of them, but, at that time there was no other choice.

98. Motivated by need, not cruelty
A single .22 rifle shot to the head is effective for sure. The motivation behind the act here is what makes it so repugnant. I grew up in a rural community and know exactly where my food comes from. Still this needless cruelty is disturbing.

Personally, I applaud you for looking at the issue objectively. The animals we decide to eat/wear/keep as pets is purely a cultural bias.

I have difficulty seeing how this is morally more reprehensible than shocking a mink 10 times up the ass in order to make a coat.

47. Well, the tuna/dolphin thing I can understand.
Only because many people (whether consciously or not) rate the "importance" of animals based on their perceived level of self-awareness, consciousness, etc. So if someone's decided to eat fish but not mammals because of higher brain activity in mammals, I can understand their not wanting to inadvertently kill mammals in the course of hunting for fish.

All of these decisions we make about what to eat/kill/wear/keep as pets are arbitrary, but you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. Most of us will happily eat an incredibly smart pig, but we wouldn't dream of eating a cat.

That being said, you're right: it usually just comes down to the Fluffy Factor. :)

yippy dog was not killed for clothing requirements, it was killed over a domestic disturbance. Like comparing killing a person kicking your door in and just randomly killing a person you are angry with.

Tuna is tasty but I only eat tuna I catch because the practice of long line and net fishing is highly destructive.

severing the spinal cord would cause death, eventually. It is not instant. Destroying the brain is generally instant. Ie 2 pistol shots to the head.

Given a choice in my death I would prefer to be injected with a massive overdose of phenobarb or a similar drug.

89. Simple bullshit meter
If I am on a business trip in SE asia I understand and accept that people eat animals I train to play fetch. This is done for necessity or cultural reasons. If I am in the states I do not expect people to justify shooting a PET as this was, and playing it off to another point.

This is not about a big idea of vegan vs meat eaters, this is about some asshole who shot a dog 10 times because of a domestic situation. That action is not acceptable in any culture, killing something someone cares about to get them back is universally asshole behavior.

My line is drawn depending on lots of factors, common sense being my basic approach.

I'm not trying to bring veganism into the debate, nor am I trying to wag fingers at anyone's dietary choices. As a frequent business traveller to SE Asia myself, I'm no stranger to wide variations in what people consider Cute vs. Food (or both!).

But your argument leads me to believe that you would think it just as bad if it had been a pet fish that had been shot 10 times and made into a fishy belt. And I don't think that's really what you're trying to say, is it?

119. They muzzle and/or restrain the mink first. (VIDEO)
Then, by sticking one electrode in the mouth and one in the anus, they complete the circuit and electrocute the mink.

Here's a video of the same procedure being done to a fox on a fur farm:

121. Had a teacher friend confiscate some baby minks at high school one day
Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 01:55 AM by uppityperson
some kid found them and thought they were ferrets so was passing them out to their friends. My teacher friend knew enough of wildlife to be able to ID them, called whomever fish&game people are to come get them. Teacher gave a talk in science classes later that week, explaining the difference between ferrets and minks.

Seems to be that gassing them would be faster/easier, but then they might chew each other up and "ruin" the fur. I inherited an old fur coat which I wear a few times a winter, was great up in AK, long and warm. That said, I would never buy one and think that anyone who does is wrong, ethically. If you really need one for the warmth, buy a used one. For fashion? Faux fur or just get another fashion sense.

And yes, I am an omnivore who raises chickens for eggs and meat. Still wouldn't raise animals just for their fur. And thank you for the video, but think I'll pass.

Edited to add that I ran across a fox fur farm while in AK. I couldn't figure out why these people had so many pet foxes and why they kept them in separate cages rather than being able to socialize together. People I was out skiing with laughed at me and explained. Appalling. Simply appalling. If you are going to raise an animal to kill and make use of its body, at least eat the thing, or use it in a respectful manner. Don't just use a small part of it and throw the rest away as this is not very respectful.

8. Stuff like this makes me question my philosophy of being opposed to
"eye for an eye" justice.

The neanderthal part of me wants to see those two people shot and skinned, their hides nailed to the wall to dry, and suitcases made from skin.

But, since the better side of me says that would be "cruel," I will settle for seeing them in prison for the rest of their sorry lives.

9. Okay, not all of this crap can be chalked up to the horrible economy.
Maybe it issimply that heinous, nightmarish acts have always been committed at the same rate they're happening now in a supposedly civilized society, and we're simply more aware of it because of the intertubes.

But, damn, people...it feels like the sickness is deepening and more and more people are losing their humanity and decency in a very real, concrete sense.

I keep looking for good news stories, and I find them, but the horror stories are more numerous and so much more extreme.

It's beyond disheartening. I pray these people don't procreate.

17. It's just a dog.
Why get so emotional? I mean, as people above have said, we kill all sorts of animals for all sorts of things. If we are going to get so bent out of shape over one dog, then our entire nation is condemned to eternal hell for what we do en masse to pigs, cows, sheep (veal???), chickens, fish, plus the minor animals. We eat 'em. We make footballs and baseballs (horsehide) out of 'em, shoes, belts, coats, we race them to death, whatever. Even though dogs have been bred to kiss our ass, that doesn't mean they're more intelligent or feeling than other animals. If you want to be vegetarian and leather free, more power to you. But as a society, how can we have huge punishments for this and nothing for the rest. It's no more cruel at all than what happens every day at a factory farm.

30. Why indeed
Humans are kinda special. Really are - in terms of ability to think about future of life, etc. I don't believe that when a butcher kills a cow, it is taking away the cow's hopes and dreams and it is leaving an unfillable gap in the lives of its friends and family. The cow certainly feels pain, as we do, and feels stress if kept in nasty conditions, as we do.

If we are talking about what is the highest level of thinking life form we kill, I would be happy to draw a line between dogs and humans if we have to. Some primates too, perhaps. You just don't go around killing humans as a resource. Should the line be lower than that? Lower than dogs? As low as chickens, fish, ants? I'm comfortable with lowering the line. I could live without leather or meat of any kind. still want to kill mosquitos.

Just to ask this question: Why the fuck do people find it necessary to post things like this here? This is something like the third or fourth animal abuse story I have seen here in the past week. Everyone here knows that this sort of vile behavior goes on all of the time. We don't need to be constantly reminded of it. I didn't click on the other stories, as just seeing the subject line gave me nightmares. I am sure I am not alone in being unable to stand the thought of dogs and cats being killed and tortured. I come to DU to get away from hearing about this kind of shit. Yet, here it is...

As I said, I am fully aware that animal abuse occurs. As is everyone else here. Forcing these images in our heads constantly isn't going to make it stop. It's nothing but preaching to the choir. Is constantly posting these sorts of stories going to stop any animal abuse? No. All it does is give people the opportunity to wag their fingers and say, "Gee, what an awful person!" Everyone here, myself included, who is against animal abuse, is already fighting it in our own ways.

Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 04:18 PM by Ignis
And that those who are, are already "fighting" against it.

I don't think either of those statements is supported by the evidence available--i.e., the posts from DUers on any AR topic.

Some people don't care. Others don't know the breadth/gravity of the abuse. It's the latter category that these topics aim to reach. HSUS and other AR organizations work not only to change laws, but also to expand public consciousness on AR subjects--which is often a prerequisite to getting the laws changed.

They are killing thousands of animals regularly. I guess when you murder so many animals you need a more efficient way than shooting them or gassing them.

Ten shots is more than sufficient to quickly and humanely kill a small animal. It is the only reasonable way available to everyone. They obviously couldn't just go buy barbiturates.

for an ex. They could have taken the animal to the shelter or to a vet (who does have t61, which is not sched2) and have it humanely killed for $20. Gassing animals is actually more efficient but states are outlawing it as cruel.

Tens shots it a mag dump in most .22 weapons. 2 shots is sufficient to kill, but that was not the point here. Skinning the animal was.

Are you defending this BTW? They had lots of options, they choose poorly.

The vet or shelter is available to everyone, the shelter is free.

120. Not trolling, disagreeing
I don't think there is anything wrong with killing animals. The people who do in this case need to be reminded how much they enjoy the murder of animals. I enjoy killing animals for food and sport, I'm a hunter. If someone is killing animals in a humane way, limiting suffering than it is fine by me. Regardless if they intend to eat the animal or not.

If it is OK to kill farm animals and hunt wild animals then it is surely alright to kill your dog. If people have a problem with killing a dog, I feel it necessary to bring up how they enjoy the slaughter of thousands of other animals.

Our euthanization rate is a disgrace, and I wish to hell that people would face the root of the problem, but there is simply no comparison. The people who did this to an animal they should have been caring for are sick and soulless.
