Oopsie! Aide confirms Ensign affair; news of possible second affair
Aide confirms Ensign affair; news of possible second affair
@ 6:48 pm by Eric Zimmermann

A former aide to Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) confirmed today that she had an affair with the Nevada Republican. Ensign shocked the political world yesterday by admitting to an extramrrital relationship with a former aide, but he did not disclose the woman's name.

Cynthia Hampton issued a statement today through her lawyer confirming her identity as the woman in question. Hampton was a campaign aide to Ensign during the affair. Her husband, Doug Hampton, was a staffer in Ensign's senate office.

"Doug and Cindy Hampton can confirm that they are the individuals referenced by Senator Ensign during his press conference," a lawyer for the couple said in a statement, according to the AP.

Despite reports that blackmail threats by Doug Hampton prompted Ensign's announcement, the lawyer claimed the Hampton's had hoped to keep the matter private.

"It is unfortunate the senator chose to air this very personal matter, especially after the Hamptons did everything possible to keep this matter private," the lawyer added. "It is equally unfortunate that he did so without concern for the effect such an announcement would have on the Hampton family. In time the Hamptons will be ready and willing to tell their side of the story."

The AP is also reporting on a possible second affair Ensign had in 2002:

The disclosure resurrected questions about a two-week period in 2002, when Ensign abruptly dropped from public view. A person familiar with that episode, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Tuesday the senator told a close associate the absence followed an earlier affair.

1. LMFAO
Republicans are so vile and hypocritical...are these politicians so dumb they can't see their hypocrisy, or do they not care? I guess it varies from Repub to Repub.

3. "... yesterday...he did not disclose the woman's name."
At the time, I wondered if all his buddies looked at their wives and wanted to know if she was the one. Now there's more to the story. He probably did several of them.

18. Yes, this totally reminds me of how Craig and Vitter were forced to resign.
You gotta tear weeds out by the roots. Those fuckers just cling on forever.

5. Well, when you're blackmailing someone, of course you want to keep the matter private
Maybe Ensign can get some numbers from Vitter for people who can clean up messes...

8. So, the woman is completely innocent?
"It is equally unfortunate that he did so without concern for the effect such an announcement would have on the Hampton family.

What would be the negative effect on the Hampton family if she hadn't had an affair to confess to?

10. That's their problem
I don't give a flying fugg about hypocrites and their families.
My only interest in the Hamptons is the money trail starting with her severance package.

13. After the Vitter affair (pun intended), Ensign has nothing to worry about.
The GOP must have an authorized script for philanderer's to read because they all sound the same.

Depends, though, when it comes to the GOP.

21. "The Hamptons did everything possible to keep this matter private," says their lawyer
Including trying to sell their silence to Ensign--which would have been perfectly legal if they HAD used a lawyer?
