SACRAMENTO - California Republicans, increasingly disenchanted with the war in Iraq, are beginning to abandon President Bush, a development that may threaten the GOP's chances in the 2008 presidential race...
... "Those are devastating numbers," said Republican consultant Karen Hanretty, a former communications director for the state Republican Party. "Republicans are in a real bind now. They will have to make a decision about how and when they start distancing themselves from the Bush legacy."
Republicans vying to succeed Bush in 2008 will have to overcome the general perception of incompetence that has made up his legacy, Hanretty said, from how he handled Hurricane Katrina to the clumsy handling of the dismissals of eight U.S. attorneys currently embroiling the White House....
...Bush's problems stem in part from his credibility problems. Overall, only 28 percent believe he tells the truth, according to the San Jose State poll, while 67 percent don't. Among Republicans, 58 percent believe he tells the truth, and 35 percent don't - a drop from 66 percent who believed him in January.
"There's a huge credibility gap," said Phil Trounstine, the director of the San Jose State poll. "Bush has a tremendous problem in California because a vast majority don't believe he tells the truth and are opposed to the war in Iraq."
