Report: Gay bias killings highest since 1999
Incidents increased by 28 percent in 2008 compared to 2007

NEW YORK - The number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people killed in bias-motivated incidents increased by 28 percent in 2008 compared to a year ago, according to a national coalition of advocacy groups.

Last year's 29 killings was the highest recorded by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs since 1999, when it documented the same number of slayings, according to a report released Tuesday by the coalition.

"What we're also seeing, more disturbingly, is the increase in the severity of violence," said Sharon Stapel, executive director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project, which coordinates coalition.

18. Andh ow is the bigger population factored in? And what factors make up the bigger population?
How granular a level do people want? I could cite a few dozen potential causes inferences that would piss off everybody, on both sides of the issue, which really shouldn't be an issue but is...

14. I don't blame Obama for this
The fault of this lies squarely on the churches and the hate groups they collude with to depict gays and lesbians as less than human and undeserving of rights.

Hate crimes legislation won't stop this. It will allow police to bring extra charges against the people who commit the crimes, but these people are not sitting down and doing a cost-benefit analysis before they commit the crime.

15. Agreed.
Although not performing a "cost-benefit" analysis doesn't preclude the fact that many of these hate cimes are planned rather than opportunistic.

16. Not sure how it breaks down between planned and spur of the moment
And even on the planned ones, I'm not sure people sit down and figure out what the penalty might be, That's really not how the criminal mind works.
Trust me, I've known a few criminals in my time.

20. Oh, you're forgetting some people...

I suppose I should post pics, but seeing stereotyped images of what the media loves to find and broadcast about what we look and act like the most certainly isn't going to help -- one way or the other. Well, maybe the other, the churches DO use those lewd scenes as ways to strengthen their cause.

In short, and I'm amazed this isn't obvious, we feed some of the hatred to the churches too. I said that once before, about 4 years ago, about the image we present to the media... but apparently, it's wrong to criticize lewd parade floats and maybe, just maybe why they have a negative influence. So I stopped. I must be insane for saying so again... I don't expect anything to change for the better. I'm just an outsider looking in. Though if you go to some actual gay sites, you'll find I am not alone... you'll find my personals ad there too. There are some good people around, if you can find them...

http://images.google.com/images?q=gay%20pride%20parade

FFS... I didn't need to look very hard and I know a lot which are far more stereotype-setting than most of those. With moderate safesearch turned on, I needn't say another syllable. Those pictures regrettably say far more than ANYTHING ELSE. Try turning safeserarch off -- that should really return a few doozies...

As the parade is the focal point of the year, it's not difficult to comprehend that THAT is what the media, and others, use to degrade us.

You're welcome. Don't blame me. Or dare to.

22. Blaming the victims?
If those queers would just stop having parades, and be a little less fabulous, the hate would go away, right?

Wow, I'm not even gay and I hate self-loathers...

23. Are you for real??
Those pictures are no more racy than anything you'd see about Spring Break at Daytona...and yes, I've seen the really racy ones when you take off safesearch. I have never seen a more blatant case of blaming the victim than I've seen in your post. I just took you off ignore so I could tell you that. Now you're going back on. Fucking ridiculous.

24. Go and Google "Mardi Gras" or "Spring Break"
With the safesearch turned off, and see what comes up.

And let's ignore the fact that the hate was there, but even more poignant, before the Parades or Stonewall.

But hey, get rid of the parades..and if that doesn't stop the "hate machine"..well, you could alwasys not be so "vocal" about it in your everyday lives..and if that's enough, well, you could stop mentioning it altogether-hell, why not just go back to the closet? The hate won't go away, as history has proven, but you can rest assured that it wasn't the GLBT members faults.

33. Excellent response to an obvious bowl of bullshit.
Being I live in New Orleans, I can tell you half of what you see on the websites doesn't even compare to seeing it for real. The most "obscene" thing I saw was a mother and father with two kids in tow, one in a stroller, and the mother whipping her tits out for beads and the father showing off his cock (which was NOT impressive) for beads. It was surreal. Keep in mind this is all occurring after the "crackdown" which began to be enforced in 2004.

37. Enough of that bullshit
Why not claim Christians wearing crosses and Muslims wearing hijabs are the cause of anti-religious hate crimes, or that blacks bring hate crimes on themselves because of the type of music they listen to? People like you make me sick.
