Republican Short Term Memory Loss - Remember The Jokes About Chelsea?

While talking about the dustup between David Letterman and Sarah Palin, Republican strategist John Feehery instantly tried to say that no one made jokes about Chelsea Clinton. Contessa Brewer wouldn’t let that go and stopped him right in his tracks, which led Feehery to try and claim that Chelsea wasn’t 14 when the jokes were being made. Brewer then corrected that and reminded him, complete with finger wag and all, that Chelsea was only 12.

Considering how offended Sarah Palin is by Letterman’s jokes, I am sitting here wondering if she will boycott Rush Limbaugh now. Ok you caught me – I’m not wondering. We all know the answer to that, just like we saw how she never seemed to worry about the “jokes” her former running-mate made about Chelsea.

John McCain's crude Chelsea Clinton joke

John McCain made this odious joke about Chelsea Clinton back in '98.

Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

-- Sen. John McCain, speaking to a Republican dinner, June 1998.

Not only is McCain's hideous attempt at humor about 10 times more tasteless than what Shuster said (as the David Corn article notes, newspapers that reported on the joke wouldn't even print it), but while the newsman's ill-conceived comment was at least spontaneous, McCain's joke was a prepared remark to a public audience.

Maybe McCain has more in common with Limbaugh than Rush thinks. The straight talk express should be ashamed of himself.

2. Republican Chelsea jokes were cruel. I remember them.
She was at an awkward age. She grew up to be beautiful.

3. She rocked when she was awkward
And yeah, the jokes were cruel. That's right out of the GOP playbook. Rush Limbaugh can twitch like a fish in a frying pan "imitating" Michael J. Fox and no one gives a shit. Letterman makes a joke about Palin and it's the Apocalypse.

4. And remember how folks on the left thought such things were in bad taste
 Guess we can't complain when they do it.
