SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento radio hosts apologized on air Thursday after a controversy surrounding comments about transgender people.
Hosts Arnie States and Rob Williams, who appear on the "Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning" show on 98.5 KRXQ, have taken heat from the gay and lesbian community after the May 28 statements.
States earlier said on the air that he would smack his son in the head with a shoe if the child came to him wearing high heels. States later said his comments about transgender people were "a joke," adding that he would never call on parents to beat their children.
Williams on Thursday expressed regret for the comments.
"I am sorry that this show in any way made it sound like we would ever tolerate any of those things that I described," Williams said. "It has been made perfectly clear to us that our tone and our delivery, and our ensuing defense of our tone and delivery, made it seem that we tolerate abuse towards children."
After the apology, the DJs spoke on air to a war veteran who is now living his life as a woman. They said their goal was to educate themselves and their audience about transgenders.
