D.C. Shooting: Time To Revisit Criticism Of “Right Wing Extremists” Report

Remember the enormous controversy that erupted in April over a Department of Homeland Security report that assessed the threat of “right wing extremists”? The story provoked days of nonstop cable chatter, forcing DHS chief Janet Napolitano to ultimately apologize.

Today, a gunman entered the Holocaust Museum and exchanged fire with security guards, leaving one in grave condition. MSNBC reports that the suspected gunman is connected to anti-government and white supremacist groups. If that proves correct, perhaps it’ll be time to revisit all that criticism of the DHS report. Right?

This passage from the DHS report in particular sparked a huge outpouring of rage on the right:

Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.

Conservatives looked at this passage and decided it was about them. But this report, which repeatedly talked about lone wolf types, was warning local law enforcement authorities about people exactly like this alleged gunman. And this is the second such incident this month, following the murder of Dr. Tiller.

John Aravosis thinks he’s found the suspected shooter’s Web site. If this gunman proves to be an anti-government zealot and white supremacist, there will be tons of cable chatter and mea culpa-ing to the effect that the DHS was doing exactly what it was supposed to be doing in issuing that report. Right?

3. That was some sarcasm, and I'm sure we'll be hearing cricket
chirps from all those in the gop who railed against Napolitano's statement.

And yea, you can lard on the sarcasm, too. :P

4. You are so sweet Sis
My scrawny lil tomato plants are pitiful. I got an awful late start (because of spring travel) and we are now in the midst of heat and heat and more heat.

5. Stinkin' hot here, too, BOSS. Ugh, only 4 more months of this.
And most of my flowering stuff is just about done already. Now I get to watch the weeds grow, and they're doing a fine job. Canada sounds good this time of year to me.

I was just trying to remember the exact same thing and you did it for me. Time to rub some GOP noses in this.

Rightwing bigots and anarchists.

7. Go for it! There's no way anyone can justify the reaction to that
statement given what's happened this past week.

9. The GOOPERS are frustrated
this was one of theirs, you just know they were hoping for an Arab, but these kind of terrorists were allowed to flourish under Bush and now have to brought under control

10. Why would conservatives think this was about them?
I mean, I hear "groups, movements and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented" and my thoughts turn immediately to . . .

Oh, I get it now. Well, I'm sure that all the ersatz dudgeon directed at this report will be revisted, dissected, and the most strident exponents will be force-fed their own words for the amusement of the thinking persons in the populace and as an object lesson to the mouth-breathers who egged them on.

Okay, maybe not in the same forums where they so ignorantly popped off, but absolutely and for sure wherever I have a toehold in the internet universe.

11. Department of Homeland Security: "Right wing extremism in the United States..."
Domestic right wing extremist terrorism.

How much longer will it be glossed over, denied, ridiculed and hidden by the flag-wavers?

Department of Homeland Security:

Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment, April 7, 2009

* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and
adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups),
and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or
rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a

White supremacist James W Von Brunn opens fire at Holocaust museum, June 10, 2009

Pastor who prayed for Tiller's death now prays for death of the president, June 9, 2009

June 2, 2009

BUENA PARK, Calif. (ABP) -- While most pro-life leaders condemned the May 31 murder of a controversial abortion provider inside his Wichita, Kan., church, one former Southern Baptist Convention official called it an answer to prayer.

"I am glad George Tiller is dead," Wiley Drake, the SBC's former second vice president, said on his Crusade Radio program June 1.

Tiller, one of only a few doctors in America who still performed a controversial late-term procedure termed "partial-birth" abortion by critics, was gunned down in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church just after the morning worship service began. He was serving as an usher for the congregation, where he was a long-time member.

Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif., called Tiller "a brutal, murdering monster" and said he is "grateful to God" that the physician is no longer around.

"There may be a lot who would say, 'Oh that is mean. You shouldn't be that way,'" Drake said. "Well, no, it's an answer to prayer."

Roeder, with ties to Operation Rescue, charged with murdering George Tiller

May 31, 2009

Scott Roeder, interviewed in prison, declines to admit that he murdered Tiller. BUT, if he HAD murdered him, "the entire motive was the defense of the unborn."

& the closing of Tiller's women's clinic is "a victory for all the unborn children."

HOW MUCH LONGER?

the focus for homeland security was to spy on gay groups and even religious groups pushing a liberal agenda. It's not surprising that they turn the other way when it comes to the true source of domestic terrorism, just because there may a sizeable portion of the public (including some very powerful people) backing the overall anti-liberal agenda.
