Breaking: Lieberman-Graham Dropped From Supplemental
By: Jane Hamsher Monday June 8, 2009 4:08 pm

According to sources on the Hill, the Lieberman-Graham detainee photo suppression amendment is out of the conference report of the supplemental.

For everyone who made phone calls -- pat yourself on the back.

Let us all now sit back and enjoy the spectacle of Joe Lieberman throwing a tantrum.

32. Good.
Then Congress will have to vote on the merits of the bill and not on what it's been attached to.

That's how it should be.

And that way, anyone who supports it can't hide behind the notion that they held their nose and voted yes to get the rest of the bill passed.

20. Very good News! I am so sick of retroactively changing the law to protect the guilty
from scrutiny.
This is encouraging.

I would like a list of who to thank if anyone has such a list, I believe in positive reinforcement techniques as well as negative where it concerns teaching congress-critters to behave like citizens.

Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 10:34 AM by No Elephants
I think they stopped listening to us. I still call and email, though, if only because I'd rather make even a pyrrhic gesture than do nothing at all.

I would be enormously encouraged in the future if I thought (1) enough people had actually taken action, as opposed to just bloviating and/or posting; and (2) someone in power had actually responded.

Anyone know for sure?

51. Congrats on your first call. I've been calling since the Clarence Thomas hearings. So
far, I know of no impact made by voter calls or emails. Btw, there were loads of calls about Thomas after Anita Hill testified. So many, in fact, that one Senator after another referred to them. Uncle Clarence made it to the SCOTUS anyway.

ACLU, Amnesty International, and PBS. I donate to the first two because they are fighting for things in which I believe, more powerfully than I can on my own. And I donate to PBS because, from things like Bill Moyers Journal, I learn things I don't learn from gubbamint or media that toadies to gubbamint. I am not sure I will donate to candidates or the Party again, though.

54. I just got a nice long letter from my congresswoman
(Niki Tsongas) explaining why she could not support the 2009 Supplemental for Iraq, Afghanistan and the Pandemic Flu. and discussing legislation she is co-sponsoring with Rep. McGovern requiring the Sec of Defense to submit an exit strategy for Afghanistan. While I am pleased to hear from her so quickly - she didn't exactly get the message why I was calling as I specifically communicated my objections re: the Graham-Lieberman Torture Photo retroactive law.

I'm debating about responding to her letter.

And yes, I do not donate much (in the past to campaigns, the DNC (which will NEVER get another donation from me) and charities) I am definitely considering a donation to the ACLU on Monday. Thanks

55. I'm from Massachusetts, too. No one ever writes me though. The most I get
from Kennedy or Kerry is the "Thank you for your message" that comes up on the screen right after I transmit my message to them. I used to get one from Kerry that said they were reviewing my comment and would get back to me (but I'd never hear back again). Now, I don't even get that. From Capuano (my rep), zip, zilch, nada. And that delegation is about the most Democratic you can get.

27. All we know for sure is that they don't hurt.
*A MILLION E-Mails can be deleted with a single keystroke.

*Phone Calls are usually handled by Interns, low wage staffers, or a private agency who may or may not report to the Senator/Congressman. At best, they have a simple For/Against list on several issues and your phone call will be reduced to a check mark in one of the columns. This list may then be added to the ton of paper flowing through several desks where it could hit the circular file at any stop along the way.

*Snail Mail is the BEST method available to sub-millionaires. Every single envelope is opened because they might contain &MONEY$.
What really happens to your hard copy after the envelop is check for cash is anyone's guess, but at least you KNOW someone opens the envelope.

*The only way to know for sure is to secure a direct face to face meeting. This usually requires a hefty donation (bribe). Then, at least the Senator/Congressman must sit there and pretend to pay attention.

*One method that was effective in the past was to organize large public rallies. This doesn't work anymore because if it is not on TV, then it didn't happen. Congress/Corporations have been effective at keeping these events OFF the public radar screen.

*There is one other way, and it is being used by Code Pink.

47. I know that if these congresscritters get about 13,000 letters, email, etc

they will at least LOOK. I don't have any links, but a staffer was being interviewed on Hartmann I think.

If thousands of people are demanding some action, it's much much better than a call here or there.

I think it really does work, especially with some of the wonderful action committees like PDA, MoveOn, etc. Jane Hamsher is an attorney who has lots of connections on the Hill.

LIEBERMAN THREATENS TO SHUT DOWN SENATE OVER DETAINEE PHOTOS

Sens. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) lambasted transparency advocates at a press conference Tuesday, when they renewed their promise to bring Senate business to a halt until their bill blocking the release of detainee photographs becomes law.

"We're not going to do any more business in the Senate," Graham said, his face flushed red. "Nothing's going forward until we get this right."

41. Not so fast....today at 2:30 pm, Plum Line posted this:
not sure if the presser with Graham and Lieberman came first, or the rejection of their amendment came first...anyway, Greg Sargent posted this at 2:30 this afternoon:

http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/

Wow, if this is true, it’s really something: GOP Senator Lindsey Graham said today that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton privately told him that if photos of detainee abuse are released, it will endanger diplomats all over the world.

That surprising claim came at a press conference that Graham and Joe Lieberman held today. Right now House Dems are feverishly debating whether to jettison the Lieberman-Graham amendment, which would block the release of detainee photos and was passed by the Senate, from the House version of the war-spending bill.

The thing that’s getting all the attention about their presser today is Graham and Lieberman’s claim that they will shut down the government to insure that the amendment is included. But I’d say this nugget from the presser also deserves a look:

Graham claimed that the former New York senator has told him the release of new pictures detailing detainee abuse could endanger diplomats around the world.

“Secretary Clinton is very concerned,” said Graham…

Graham, Lieberman Will Shut Down Senate over Photos
by mcjoan

Tue Jun 09, 2009 at 01:16:22 PM PDT

The dynamic duo is so oppose to transparency, and so ready to set extremely dangerous precedent of cutting the courts out of secrecy decision by legislative fiat, that they say the will shut down the Senate to see that the torture photos remain secret.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) threatened to hold up any and all legislation in the Senate until Congress passes its legislation to prohibit the release of photos showing detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We’re not going to do any more business in the Senate," Graham said. "Nothing’s going forward until we get this right."

The House has rebelled, rightfully feeling that they need to do their job correctly by, at the very least, holding hearings on this extreme piece of legislation:
