Obama's contribution to Don't Ask, Don't Tell...."seems callous to the extreme"
While its certainly disappointing that the Supreme Court would choose to let this opportunity to challenge the Constitutionality of Dont Ask, Dont Tell pass, the Obama administrations contribution to the case is even more problematic.

...The administration has said all along that it will follow and support the law while it remains legal, and yet their argument that the policy is rationally relationed to the governments legitimate interest in military discipline and cohesion seems callous to the extreme.

The complete dearth of leadership on this issue is made only more complicated by the reality that a vast (and growing) majority of Americans want to see the policy overturned. A new poll from Gallup shows that 69% of Americans want to see the policy overturned, an increase of six percent over the last five years. While liberal support for overturning the policy has consistently been high, the most dramatic change is among conservative and church-going voters.

Americans are six percentage points more likely than they were four years ago to favor allowing openly gay men and lesbian women to serve in the military, 69% to 63%. While liberals and Democrats remain the most supportive, the biggest increase in support has been among conservatives and weekly churchgoers up 12 and 11 percentage points, respectively.

The significant and diverse support for ending Dont Ask, Dont Tell means that it is time for change. The Obama administration had better wake up and smell the progress on this one, before it becomes even more obvious that theyre playing politics with our national security.

30. You know you have a post on President Truman ending discrimination in the military
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 08:55 PM by WI_DEM
but do you realize he did it more than three years in his term? and John F. Kennedy promised in 1960 to end discrimination in public housing by "a stroke of the pen". He finally did it more than two years into his term--and only after civil rights groups sent thousands of pens to the white house in protest. Obama has been on the job four months and believe it or not has a better record than any other president on gay issues but he still has a lot he could do. But politicians as Truman and Kennedy (not to mention FDR who steadfastly refused to even propose an anti-lynching bill to congress let alone end discrimination) often need time and the right moment to do things. I think Obama will do what he promised. Is it right? No, but that's why they are politicians.

4. What is it?
What is the strategy? Do you know? Is it to run a thousand people out first, avoid the courts at all costs, and do no studies for a year or more? I mean really, as the original poster pointed out, all the ducks are in his favor on this one. The command is ready. The population is ready. The need is obvious. What is this strategy?

That has to be where they get the special secret super information!

Goddess - I hope all these plans are in microfilm.

15. Great! A Republican wedge strategy: attack Sotomayor for not discussing DADT!
She'll continue not to discuss it, of course -- because potential justices typically don't express opinions on potential cases -- and so the attacks can continue indefinitely! But if she did discuss it -- the Republicans would have a field day attacking her for expressing an opinion on a potential case!

Heads? Oh, so sorry!

Tails? Gosh, what tough luck!

The Pedro Espada Jr. Show is coming to Albany
Tuesday, September 16th 2008, 4:00 AM

There's something ridiculous about a Legislature in which a pol as slippery as Pedro Espada Jr. could be the ultimate power broker.

Espada has spent most of his career double-crossing allies and dodging legal charges. Six years ago, the voters of the east Bronx cast him out of the state Senate in disgust.

He managed to win a third stint in last week's Democratic primary - but only by taking on an incumbent, Efrain Gonzalez, who is under federal indictment for allegedly ripping off taxpayers.

By rights, Espada's fellow lawmakers should be treating him as a pariah. Yet he is looking forward to being the belle of the ball when he gets back to Albany.

Why? Because his whim might well determine which party controls the state Senate - and the future direction of state government.

Republicans have a one-seat advantage, which could easily disappear on Election Day in November. If that happens, their one chance of keeping majority control in the Senate - their last power base in state government - would be to flip one or more Democrats to their side.

And Espada, among his other unsavory maneuvers, has shown a willingness to change political stripes at the drop of a hat.

He once ran unsuccessfully for City Council on the slate of the radical lefty New Alliance Party. As a Democrat, he won three terms in the Senate, in 1992, 1994 and 2000. Then, in February 2002, he abruptly defected to the Senate GOP - promising to use his newfound majority clout to benefit his east Bronx district.

A few months later, he was caught trying to direct $745,000 in pork-barrel grants to his own nonprofit organization, Soundview Healthcare, which runs a chain of clinics in the Bronx and at the time paid him more than $200,000 in salary. Espada, confronted by The New York Times, at first denied any involvement. Then he claimed he didn't know such self-dealing was against the rules. The grants were canceled.

That was not Espada's only time pushing the ethics envelope. In 1996, he lost his Senate seat when a judge found fraudulent signatures on his nominating petitions and knocked him off the ballot.

In 1998, he was indicted for allegedly using $260,000 in Medicaid money intended for his clinic to support his political campaign. He was acquitted at trial.

In 2004, seven of his Soundview employees were again charged with misusing Medicaid money - this time, allegedly diverting food intended for AIDS patients to a political rally. Three pleaded guilty. And this year, he failed to file the legally required reports documenting the finances of his Senate campaign.

Espada, noting that he has feuded constantly with his own party leaders, says his enemies are behind all these charges.

"I've been battle-tested, as has Mrs. Clinton, Bill Clinton," he says. "Once you go against the grain, you're going to get bloodied up, dirtied up."

He claims the employees who pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud were intimidated by then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. And as for his missing financial reports, he says a key campaign staffer had a family crisis and left.

But it takes a pretty fertile imagination to dream up a conspiracy large enough to cause all the trouble Espada has gotten himself into.

And it takes a pretty miserable Legislature to let a guy like this manipulate the levers of power.

That's not stopping Espada from playing his clout for all it's worth by hinting that he will support whichever party gives him the best deal.

"My community is the poorest Senate district in the state," he says. "I can't stand on line. I need a leadership position to deliver for my constituency."

According to Espada, both Senate GOP Leader Dean Skelos and Democratic Leader Malcolm Smith have called to congratulate him after his primary win, no doubt laying the groundwork for a post-election courtship.

It's just another day in Albany.
