Poll question: Do you believe Obama will not win the general election because he is black
and because America is too racist?

3. To be fair you should also add 'or Hillary' because she's female
Edited on Wed Apr-04-07 09:40 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
Or some such combination.

Racism and sexism exist in very similar demographics. It seems reasonable that if one stands no chance neither would the other.

5. create your own poll
I am trying to asses how myopic and racistist and hopeless DU is. I am just astounded at this belief that he is not electable.

and he's lily white and IMO, unelectable. Does that make me a "racistist"? Many DUers don't think Obama can win the election, and it's not because of the color of his skin. Many don't think Hillary can win, and it's not because she's a woman.

Other than that, I don't think he'll have too many problems.

8. There are only two reasons he won't get it.
He makes a mistake due to his lack of national political experience. Thus far, he has handled things well, but national campaigns are full of pitfalls and challenges.

Some other candidate like Edwards appeals more to voters based on the clarity of the other candidate's positions on policy. Obama's positions aren't clear to me on a lot of matters.

Some other candidate manages to be better liked on grounds other than race. Obama will be very hard to beat in this respect.

20. I like both Edwards and Obama.
Edwards appeals to the policy wonk in me. He cares about the poor and, as a trial lawyer, has devoted his life to seeking justice for the little guy.

Obama has a spark, and energy that is really exciting. He brings fresh perspective and great joy to the campaign.

I also like Wesley Clark, although he sometimes seems a little impatient or irritated, I'm not sure about what.

11. If a black guy can't win, a liberal can't win.
How many racists vote for liberal candidates?

If we can't run a liberal, then why bother?

Obama's race is irrelevant.

12. I was blown away the first time I heard him at the Democratic
Convention, he is articulate, intellect, and can relate to the people and he does believe in the Constitution. I think if more people get to know him they will consider him. But at this time, I am watching each candidate carefully.

A qualified "no"
I don't think it would be enough to swing the election but let's tell the truth: Obama's ethnicity is going to matter to some people. I could say the same of Hillary's gender except that I think the US has come further in dealing with gender than it has in dealing with race.

Of course, Obama is also young, bright, eloquent, charismatic, a snappy dresser and a handsome man (let's be honest, the last two never hurt). That lot might well get him elected but I have little doubt he'd have an easier time if he were white.

19. Fair point but I'm not entirely sure it's true
I'm not talking about your overt racists here. I'm talking about the majority who like to think they aren't racist but cross the street if they see a young black guy at night. Remember that most people aren't aware of their own racism and those people, if they're on teh fence now, might be swung just that little bit toward the GOP if the Democratic candidate is a black guy.

Plase note, I'm not saying that's a reason not to vote for him in the primary or general. I like the guy. He's not top of my list (he's third, after Kucinich and Gore) but what I've seen of him has impressed me and I think he could probably win comfortably anyway. I'm just giving you my impression of what I've seen.

23. He will lose the nomination because he refuses
to really give any firm statements on anything of substance. But he'll make an awesome VP for Hillary and perhaps will grow some opinions before it's his turn.

and I think the same yahoos would probably try to take Hilary out. There's still too much ignorance and flat out CRAZY out there. Most of them don't vote luckily but they have guns.
