whatever their circumstance. I just find the disparity between the care given to jailed criminals and law-abiding poor people to be more than a little annoying. I don't want to deny criminals necessary medical care, but I definitely want universal health care for all those law-abiding people who cannot afford care.
That's why I'm holding this particular case up to the light. He's not going to suddenly die for lack of a CPAP machine. He can sleep in a sitting position, the same way poor people with sleep apnea do. Many live for decades like that.

that actions have consequences. He appears to me to think that he would be worshiped for acting on behalf of his god and somehow be set on high and not thrown in jail. Now he's shocked to be treated like a criminal.

His lack of a CPAP machine is not going to kill him. Most people with sleep apnea don't have one, anyhow, and that's especially true of the medically uninsured.
I expect all prisoners to be treated humanely. I do not expect them to be treated better than the poor in this country are treated. Not at all.
That's why I say he should have his CPAP machine, just as soon as all those who are uninsured and not criminals have theirs if they have sleep apnea. We cannot treat our violent criminals better than we treat our own poor, for pete's sake.

Get some perspective here. Do you not realize that a majority of people with sleep apnea do not have CPAP machines? Among the uninsured, it is a huge majority.
I know the risks of sleep apnea, believe me.

Sleeping sitting up is a good interim alternative...one most poor people are forced to use if they cannot afford a CPAP machine. For pete's sake, what did people do all those years before CPAP machines became available to the average person with health insurance?
We go to far in our concern over this man. That is why I suggested that he get his CPAP machine when everyone who needs one and cannot afford it has one. Universal health care! Not just health care for those who can afford it...and jailed criminals. A little perspective, please.

care like CPAP machines do. I have a sister-in-law who sleeps in a recliner because she doesn't have health insurance. None of the rest of her family can afford to pay for her CPAP machine, either. She does OK with sleeping sitting, and her sleep apnea is the least of her problems.

Perhaps they could strap him down in locked restraints while he uses his CPAP machine...you know...to prevent him from killing himself.
I do NOT want Scott Roeder hanging himself in jail. I want him to spend the rest of his miserable life in prison if he is conviced of murdering Dr. Tiller.
But, as you say...there are problems putting a CPAP machine in a jail cell.

Works for me. Years and years of nights spent in restraints, but the poor baby WILL have his CPAP.
