The timing of a fundraising appeal from former Kansas attorney general Phill Kline that mentions George Tiller is “unfortunate,” a spokesman said Thursday. The five-page letter probably began hitting thousands of Kansas mailboxes last Friday, spokesman Brian Burgess said.
“The events of the weekend were impossible to predict,” Burgess said. “It’s fair to say that the timing of this letter is unfortunate.”
Tiller, a performer of late abortions, was murdered Sunday at his Wichita church.
In the letter, Kline, a longstanding abortion opponent, said he was seeking donations to offset $200,000 in attorneys’ fees “billed to me personally” that stemmed from a December 2007 trial ordered by the Kansas Supreme Court.
“I have acted in faith consistent with my duty and oath of office,” wrote Kline, now a visiting professor at Liberty University in Virginia. “When you think about it, the battle is understandable. They must silence the truth by silencing the messenger; and to date, I am the only one who has been willing to speak the truth.
