No Bible Show and Tell in public schools.....

PHILADELPHIA - A kindergartner's mother cannot read Scripture during show and tell, even if the Bible is the boy's favorite book, a U.S. appeals court ruled.

"Parents of public school kindergarten students may reasonably expect their children will not become captive audiences to an adult's reading of religious texts," Chief Judge Anthony J. Scirica wrote in Monday's split 2-1 opinion, which upheld a lower court's ruling.

This strong Christian agrees 100% with the court's ruling, and with the school's principal whose opinion is noted in the article. The mother has no right at all to force the other children to hear Bible passages. This would be fine in a private Christian school, but NOT a public one.

1. what's with the mom coming for show and tell, anyway?
I don't remember parents ever being there for show and tell when I was in kindergarten.

3. The judge that voted against this decision should be removed from the bench
I don't know how you can have a more clear cut case of violation of the seperation between church and state.

4. As my son said after reading a paper aloud in his required college religion class...
'Well, I was the only one there who didn't have the bible shoved up my *ss.' It gets harder and harder to have private personal beliefs and not be hounded by the zealots.

5. You know
Those kids won't die from listening to the Bible, but this mother is a dumbass for trying to use her child to make a point. Now this ruling may lead to precluding instances where reading *any* religious book in a more appropriate setting. As a christian I have no objection to my kids reading religious books from around the world because religion has shaped history and cultures since the beginning of time. It's important to understand how other people think, their poetry, etc. That does not mean they have to believe any of it either. Show and tell for kindergartners is not the time nor the place to do it, rather for a world literature or world history class in high school or college.

8. Reading scripture at show and tell?
Worst idea ever. The mother needs to be a bit more subtle. Tell the teacher that the kid is bringing in LEGO for show and tell. And then....

9. Another parent out of touch with their own child
A family baby sitter described the children's book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" as the boy's favorite that year, the school district said.

13. As I said,
I am a strong Christian, and I do NOT want my church meddling in the government any more than I want the government meddling in my church! I think it as absolutely ESSENTIAL that the two remain separate from each other.

If the other children's parents want them to hear Bible stories, I'm sure they will see to it.

15. wow, sepration of church and state being upheld? i'm flabberghasted.
and if the bible is this kid's favorite book, that tells me he's probably not reading much else. i'm sure a kindergartner would much more prefer harry potter, how to eat fried worms, anything by shel silverstein, etc etc etc.
