Poll: GOP dominated by white conservatives
@ 9:32 am by Jeremy P. Jacobs

Cue the big tent advocates in the GOP: A new poll shows that the Republican Party is composed of a majority of white conservatives.

The Gallup poll, released Monday, found that 63 percent of self-identified Republicans are non-Hispanic "white conservatives." Another quarter - 26 percent - said they are white but did not identify as conservative. So, nearly nine in ten respondents who identified as Republican were white.

Those numbers stand in stark contrast to Democrats. About half - 53 percent - of self-identified Democrats identified as white, non conservatives. Nearly two in ten Democrats were black and 11 percent were Hispanic.

This poll comes, of course, as the Republican Party has lost the last two election cycles. As a result, a debate has been sparked about whether the GOP needs to adhere to a more pure conservatism or seek to broaden its base.

As Gallup notes: "The results show clearly that the Republican Party today is first and foremost a political entity dominated by white Americans."

So, it looks like if the GOP intends to become a big tent party, it's got its work cut out for it.

There was a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percent in the poll.

really?

PS, I note how "white conservative" and "white non-conservative" have become two separate ethnicities. It's two separate cultures, so I guess it's a pretty logical development.

12. Makes me wonder what the definition of 'conservative' was in the study.
By literal definition today's Republicans are mostly fiscal liberals but call themselves conservatives. And I was wondering why whites are separated by 'conservative' and 'non-conservavive' in this result, while others are not.

17. We have more people of color in the South than nearly any
other region in the country.

So... that "Southern strategy" thing actually didn't work. Nixon started it and, by 1996, the South was still, by and large, supportive of Clinton - and voted for him.

What changed the South was the influx of right-wing talk radio with no liberal alternative.

10. the GOP has not dealt with demographic realities in a very long time
They still operate like people of color and women can't vote. Seems the party of white guys who think they can still be the boss of America just isn't dealing with the realities of what America is.

I am loving the fact that government is looking more like America instead of an old-style country club where women have to be invited to events and people of color just serve the drinks. Long way to go until the ratios actually reflect the population, but things are a whole lot better than when I was a newly registered voter; a world of difference from how things were when I was a kid.

The GOP just hasn't caught on to what America IS. They only know they are not always getting their way and they seem to think that means someone has fucked up their the divine right to govern they think they have. Their tantrums are getting ugly and annoying.

'We The People' is not we threw off a monarchy with a 'divine ruler' for an oligarchy with divine rulerS, all of one demographic. Memo to the newt: deal with it.

14. They harken back to the days of the old white guys who were po'd about Women's Lib
and civil rights, from back in the 60's.

They too, shall pass. Thank god. It's taken more generations to get rid of this mindset than I thought it would, back when I was newly registered.

15. I think it goes back to when my granny got first got the vote
and signed up to be an election judge cuz she KNEW the boys would be trying to turn women back from the polls.

My granny died at her polling place duty station on primary day in 1960. She KNEW the boys would never give up trying to control things so she didn't give up until she died with her boots on. I keep that in mind when I ponder politics, power and demographics to this day.

Never stop being vigilant, because it will always be necessary to safeguard civil rights in this democracy.
