Need To Know: 04.04.07, A New American Morning Edition

Glynnis MacNicol | Posted Wednesday April 4, 2007 at 06:06 AM

O'Brien Overhaul! Ratings challenged CNN "American Morning" anchors Soledad O'Brien and Miles O'Brien are out, and expected to be replaced by former CBS White House Correspondent John Roberts and recent Fox alum Kiran Chetry. Roberts left CBS last year when he was passed over for the anchor position that eventually went to Katie Couric, and Chetry left Fox in February amidst rumors (since denied) that she had demanded an anchor position written into her contract. One result of the change? American Morning is now one half Canadian.

2. I guess we'll have to see how it goes.
It will be refreshing not to have to look at/listen to the O'Brien Twins every morning, though.

Soledad is almost gleeful when she reports bad news for Democrats. I'll bet she's so excited she piddles her panties. And Miles, well, it will be nice to not have to see him much.

We'll see how the two new ones do, I normally like John Roberts, but don't really know where he stands politically, which might be a good thing. I don't really care which party a news anchor supports, as long as they don't make it obvious on the air by tilting stories, or inflicting their own opinions into current events.

3. Huum, wonder if Solodad's rant with Tony Snow
had something to do with her leaving?

She was interviewing him and she said something about "your people are telling me(by earphone) to end this interview." Remember that one?

I was just beginning to really like her.

8. I doubt that
had anything to do with it. American Morning's ratings have been getting progressively worse to the point that Imus beasts them on a regular basis. Something had to be done and I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. Although this still won't make me tune in.

4. I could never stand Sosobad. I didn't like how she treated Miles.

I used to watch it. Actually I liked Daybreak the 5am news cast because the anchor was funny. She had me crackin up. Then they took that off and replaced it with American morning but after Sosobad took the anchor chair I couldn't stand it. I literally stopped watching the only newscast I had time for. She stunk up news so bad for me that I can't watch ANY newscast.

I love Miles.

5. OK - Keith Olbermannn just gets a huge raise because he's
found a significant number of liberals, independents and truth-seekers who aren't being served by corporate media's leaning toward the right.

So what does CNN do? Hires a Faux News reject??? And calls it an overhaul???

Boggles the mind!

9. No kidding...could they BE any more clueless?
When they got rid of that idiot Hemmer I started watching CNN in the morning...primarily because there wasn't much else to watch.

I actually used to like the guy that did the market/ financial reports (Andy Cerwin? Sp?)

Maybe it was my imagination...but I often thought he and Miles were often times slamming the Republicans and Enron types in a tongue and cheek fashion and it was refreshing to watch it.

Right about the time Cerwin disappeared IManass started his Dick Cheney rants so I switched to him (Gee I wonder why IManasses ratings are up 55%? Gee--could it be that people like listening to him rant about the Whitehouse? Hmmmm...)

SOooooo MSNBC's ratings are at an all time high, Faux's ratings have been slipping substantially but CNN reorganizes by hiring a Faux news buffooon--yeah, that sounds like a plan! NOT!

Incidentally, I cannnot stand the woman who is replacing Soledad...Soledad was bad but that woman is just a shrill, brainless, obvious right winger acting type IMO

Why doesn't CNN just give Ann Coulter a morning anchor job and call it a day?!

6. Says more about the viewing public than it does about CNN
Of the three cable shows, CNN was the only one that did straight news in the morning. Fox has its insufferable Fox and Friends program, while MSNBC just broadcasts Don Imus' radio show.

Apparently, ratings at both CNN and Fox have declined, while Imus' have skyrocketed. Given that his guests generally call in, as opposed to actually appearing on the show (thus making it a poor match for television), this leaves me wondering — WTF?

Of course, the sad part here is that, despite the heaviest ratings decline, Fox's asinine morning show still beats both Imus and CNN by a 2-to-1 ratio.

10. Roberts reminds me a bit of the King of Real Estate character in AMERICAN
BEAUTY that Annette Benning has an affair with.
