Pelosi wears scarf - righties bark at moon (with pics of scarved Pickles & al)
Edited on Wed Apr-04-07 10:47 AM by The Count
The jolly folks at Little Green Footballs have gone batshit bleeping crazy because Nancy Pelosi wore a headscarf to visit a mosque in Syria. “Pelosi in a hijab!” they shriek.
Hello? Some of us old enough to remember when women were required to cover their hair in Catholic churches. Here’s the divine Jackie with that first guy she married outside a church sometime in the late 1950s.http://www.mahablog.com/2007/04/04/pelosi-wears-scarf-righties-bark-at-moon/

Edited on Wed Apr-04-07 11:26 AM by Up2Late
...according to the RW Nuts "thinking" would that mean my Sister is trying to "turn me Jewish?" :sarcasm:

Respect is exactly what it is, like taking off your Cowboy Boots when entering a mosque or (in terms they would understand) your Momma's Living Room.

Yes, back in the 1960 women still wore hats to church. How I adored my lacy Easter bonnet and white gloves and white buckel strap shoes and brand new spring frock.

Actually, as a child I had a big time crush on Dracula. And the vampire guy on Dark Shadows.....totaly meltdown. Christopher Lee....swoon! These days....no vampires for me, I hate the night life, give the sun and singing birds.

What a lovely photo of JFK and Jackie though. Looks like St. Patrick's in New York to me, but I could be wrong on that one.

After all, Jenna wore bluejeans to meet the Queen.

That family is tactless, tasteless white trash.

(I hate to point out the obvious to the right wing, but it's just plain nuts to be out in the desert sun without covering one's skin as much as possible, especially a head covering.)

37. I think she is actually....
I am not a big Royalist but I respect The Queen, from the moment she became in line for The Throne she was educated for the job. It is her job as Queen of a large Commonwealth to know and understand the varied countries that are in The Commonwealth,
much of the Commonwealth including the UK has a large population of Muslims, therefore she has to understand the cultures and respect them too. It is part of the training that is given to the person that is first in line to the throne. It is her job to know who is sitting at her State Dinner table and she will not get their names wrong or refuse to eat their food when she is in their countries, either.
She maybe hugely wealthy but she has changed with the times and I have heard when she gives out honours she knows who they are, what they do and can ask questions about their occupation too.
She is also very informed on current affairs, even at the age of 81,she can't give her opinion on this war, in public but she is well informed and her grandson is going to serve with other peoples children. I have to say that in the wake of 7/7 I was very proud of her coming out and speaking in public, no bulletproof glass, no clumsy gestures and it was oddly reassuring to us in London.

16. And there's actually a cultural reason that transcends the
religious one.

It's effing hot there. A headscarf (and long dress) allows the body to sweat and compensate for the dry heat (it's harder to sweat when there's little humidity) to cool itself off.

There is a real reason to this that isn't religious.

Edited on Thu Apr-05-07 07:25 AM by VelmaD
While a head covering may help with the heat...telling women they MUST wear one is religious/cultural bullshit.

I live in Texas. It's pretty effing hot here in the summer. Sometimes I wear a gimme cap. Most of the time I don't. And no right-wing christo-fascist gets to tell I MUST wear one. And that's the difference.

8. When in Rome and all that...
Seriously, if you're planning on a visit to St. Peters they have guards that patrol the lines waiting to get in who refuse entrance to everyone who doesn't meet the dress code. St. Peters wasn't the only church I visited there that had a dress code either. It was however the only one that had vendors selling disposable clothing.

I see no difference in showing respect of the dress code at the Vatican or at a mosque.

Diana Sawyers wears a scarf when she's reported from the Middle East. Condi and Laura both wore head coverings at the Popes funeral.

Respect for other cultures is something that they seem to be against. How sad.

35. DUers sounding like Freepers: just one example:
"I know little about the cultures that still allow honor killings, don't persecute rapes and practice female circumcision. But I will criticize them anyway. Would you care to defend those practices?"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=572614&mesg_id=577181

another:

I see it differently She's mimicking the hijab. If you understand why women are compelled to wear the hajib or the burka in Muslim society then you will feel revulsion at this, not admiration.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=572614&mesg_id=572637

another:
I don't like it we are giving a free pass to something because of a perceived 'respect' toward 'culture'. This same culture would stone me because I am gay. Maybe the Speaker could cut off my hands in a public square as a sign of 'respect' for the local customs.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=572614&mesg_id=572967

and many more on that thread. It seems we have a very long way to go as well....

14. I seem to remember Diane Sawyer...
wearing one while interviewing The PM of Iran. I am a feminist of the first order and happen to think Muslims are wrong on the Chador and the head scarf but even I would wear it out of deference. I have accidental offended folks before and it is not something I care to repeat. Of course, I was discretely told of it but it was embarrassing. Most folks knew I did not know the culture, but you do want to make a good impression. Wearing a scarf is a small thing.

17. Nuns
Remember the Nuns dressed in habits? Black from head to toe, veils down to the floor? Some of their headpieces came down to their foreheads and up to their chins. On a couple of occasions recently, I saw a few still dressed that way.

Yes, I am old enough to remember needing a head covering in church. You can still see older women at Mass who will wear a scarf over their heads, especially in ethnic communities.

I have been to many Jewish services. Would I wear a cross around my neck to them? Absolutely not. A friend took us to a Buddhist ceremony and we willing took off our shoes. It's all about RESPECT. But I guess these Freeptards don't know the meaning of respect for other cultures and other religions.

24. Let the yuppie fascists have carnal relations with themselves
The Speaker has gotten more positive results toward relieving tension in the Middle East in two days than Bush has made in six years of war and chaos.

Normally, I would also be concerned about the Speaker of the House playing diplomat, which is supposed to be the president's job though the Secretary of State. Unfortunately, Mr. Bush, our presumptive president, hasn't done it. It doesn't help that his idea of a diplomat is a Cruise Missile.

When Rev. Jackson engaged in personal diplomacy to gain the release of a captured US airman from Syria in 1983, President Reagan had reason to be embarrassed but was at least gracious enough to acknowledge that Jackson succeeded where he didn't even try. Don't expect that kind of graciousness from these arrogant bastards.

33. Pickles (Laura Bush) says Freepers are intolerant bigots......
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/03/20040308-6.html

Q What do you think about certain countries' efforts to ban religious expression, such as scarves for Muslim women in schools, or wearing crosses?

MRS. BUSH: Well, in the United States, because we are a country of immigrants, because of that, we have learned to accept differences. In fact, that's what makes our country so rich, is our diversity. It makes us rich culturally. We have every religion, we have people from all parts of the world who now call the United States home. And all that great confluence of ideas that came from every culture has made our country particularly diverse. And because of that, though, we've been more willing to accept differences, to accept the idea that in some religions you would want to wear a cover or a cross or a yarmulke. I admire that about the people in my country. I admire that tolerance that we have for each other.
