Why does Bill Maher try to paint himself as a Libertarian?
At least sometimes...I am becomming more and more socially Libertarian and more and more economically Libertarian I find. Yet many of the things that he champions are hardly libertarian causes.

That's what a libertarian is.

5. he likes his drugs and he's a bit immature. But, he does seem to want regulation with
food, not very libertarian of him.

Edited on Thu May-28-09 10:10 AM by HarukaTheTrophyWife
That's what caused us to get into this economic mess.

Are you sure this is the right place for you?

21. Yeah, pretty much
I agree with them on some things like guns and drugs, but for social/economic programs, it doesn't work.

7. He's not a Libertarian. Most people who paints themselves as Libertarian are not.
Nearly all Americans are impossible to pigeon-hole in terms of their politics. They have liberal attitudes on some things, conservative on others, and nearly everyone has some tendencies toward preferences about civil liberties.

Maher is hard core liberal. However, just as O'Reilly proclaims to be independent, Maher's declaration of being Libertarian is pure crapola. They say that stuff to provide cover from their audience when they dare criticize their heroes.

Libertarians are half-wits with no grasp on reality.

There, I've said it for you.

10. I dunno, he's ascared of guns. I paint him "annoying"...
Fuckin' idiot.

I often enjoy his guests, but he's just a little too slapsticky for me.

I don't mind being stupid, but being stupid AND self-righteous about it annoys me no end.

11. I don't think he's holding the paintbrush
and his fans get persnickety when the room color doesn't always match the color chip, he's an entertainer that uses political cometary for his material so he primarily goes for the laugh sometimes at the expense of the beliefs of his core audience, he pushes against their boundaries.

Besides Bill had it easy for the last 8 years, Bush was the comedic equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel, you couldn't really miss, now he really has to work at it so I expect him to do a lot of overreaching to get a laugh.

12. In defense of Bill Maher..
Although I think he can defend himself quite capably. But I think he comes up with some original and enlightening comments every once in a while and, most of the time, he has a very passionate discussion on his show.

13. I've had a hard time forgiving Maher for being rude to Studs Terkel.
He made fun of him for being elderly and hard of hearing. Not cool! Maher is a spoiled Hollywood baby. Franken had Studs on his show and showed him due respect and patience.

15. Maher is a comic, an entertainer, not a spokesman for the left.
I find this idea that any celebrity--particularly a standup--who is remotely close to our side needs to display some kind of ideological purity in their act very disturbing.

Comics have a stage persona that may or may not be anything like they are in real life.
