I really do think that climate helps the Franciscans out when it comes to demonstrating. You sit on the asphalt here and you will toast your buns.

15. In case anyone wonders, the guy in the middle of the picture of the justices was the dissenter.
Carlos Moreno. Pick him for the next SCOTUS nominee.

"Justice Carlos Moreno wrote that the measure "violates the essence of the equal protection clause of the California Constitution and fundamentally alters its scope and meaning."

"The majority's holding is not just a defeat for same-sex couples, but for any minority group that seeks the protection of the equal protection clause of the California Constitution," Moreno wrote."

The smiling little fundie in photo 4 looks like a gnomish Dan White. Things don't change much, do they? I'm not a violent person but I swear I'd slap the grin right off his face if I encountered him.

19. I'm having a problem with that.
Wanting to slap them, I really want to. I'm going to the protest this afternoon in Tampa, and I know that piece of shit Larry the street preacher will be there. I'd like to see him trampled. I know it's not good press, though I wonder if fighting back doesn't actually make us look serious. Candlelight vigils make me want to puke.

23. I've seen a lot of their hatred,
and so far I've been peaceful. They come out in droves on every Pride event in San Francisco and mostly we just point and laugh and move on. But now I'm seriously pissed. Now they're fucking with me in a very personal way.

The day after Prop H8 passed, there was a "peaceful" rally here in Palm Springs. Some woman with a big styrofoam cross waded right into the crowd of gay folks with her Jesus slogans. As you can imagine, nerves were a little raw and a bunch of people grabbed her cross of hate and broke it.

Then, she became a martyr for the cause -- got interviewed more than she was worth. The police tried their damndest to get her to press charges. And, it gave the fundies a chance to paint the gay community and violent and anti-Christian.

The interesting thing was that in a subsequent interview, the woman said she had nothing against gay people getting married, but that she had been told by her minister that her church could be shut down if Prop H8 didn't pass. That's why she was in favor of it.

The clergy didn't make one argument in favor of Prop H8 that wasn't a lie.

don't block or impede traffic.

Others have jobs, errands and personal affairs to tend to.

Fucking with their time only hurts your cause by pissing them off.

the millions of Peace protesters too? The immigration protesters in Los Angeles? Those bastards on the bridge back in the day? Dr King and that lot of traffic stoppers! Shame! People have errands to run, and the straights have plenty of affairs to tend to, if their divorce rate is any indication!

Yeah... they're inconsiderate, selfish assholes for infringing on the rights of others whom even may or may not share their grievance, and choose not to become caught up in their protest.

I'm all in favor of the right to seek protest/"petition the Government for a redress of grievances", the right to peaceably assemble, and the right to free speech, but the limit to those rights end when the protesters selfishly have no respect for the rights of others.

"People have errands to run, and the straights have plenty of affairs to tend to"

Yes... because we all know that it's inconceivable that any gay people that day would feel inconvenienced or upset that a screaming mob felt it necessary to their cause to impede/block traffic without consideration for the rights of others.

Edited on Thu May-28-09 04:32 AM by Downtown Hound
I can assure you that San Francisco has many streets, and the particular intersection we chose was very easy to go around. At the most we maybe added three or four extra minutes to anybody's all-important shopping experience. There were some cars that initially got trapped by the blockade and sat there for a bit, but eventually, after about 20 minutes or so, the police got those cars out of there too.

And I can also assure you that if there were any gay people there that were offended by the action, they were an EXTREME MINORITY. As a straight man, I have never felt the adoration, love and gratitude of so many gay people, hell, so many people, as I did yesterday.
