Matthews, Cheenee, and Cheney
Matthews, playing the role of the self-appointed consummate insider, has been crowning and lecturing that the family pronounces it CHEE nee.

This week, their evil fucking spawn, Liz, was asked how the name was pronounced.

"CHAY nee" she said.

How about your Dad? Older family members? Did anyone ever use "Cheenee?"

"No." she said.

But Chris Matthews always says that the way you pronounce it, she was told.

"I don't think we've ever invited Chris Matthews to a Cheney family event. How would he know?"

Once again, we receive conclusive proof. Chris Matthews is a self-absorbed, name dropping, know-nothing, gasbag.

Fuck you, Chris.

3. Yes, he's irritating sometimes, but there aren't very many TV commentators who rank above him.
Among the general ranks of TV news commentators, I place him near the top. True, that says more about the general ranks of TV news commentators than it says about him.

4. didn't Chris
show a clip the other day, in response, of Lynne Cheney saying that it IS pronounced Cheeeeney, on NPR a couple years ago? I didnt' see it, but that's what I read. Chris Matthews is a dorky whore, and the Cheeeeney thing gets annoying, but I'll still take his side over Cheney.

14. Yes, and I recall he started pronouncing it that way because he had been told,
indirectly (probably by Liz) that it was pronounced that way.

5. Alan SIMPSON was the original source for the CHEENEE thing
I saw SIMPSON say on a couple of different venues that he is an ancient friend of CHEENEE's, from the same part of the country, and that it was pronounced CHEENEE. That was years ago.

Lowly, nobody internet poster that I am, *I* started using "CHEENEE" here long before Tweety started doing it. My purpose was to use whatever to make-his-name different, even if it was a TRUE rendering, like NEVER using the B*** surname and always referring to him as Shrub.

The Liz Lizard just finds CHAYnee to sound "classier".

6. Media Matters covered that one...
Apparently there's some disagreement within the Cheney family:

8. Thom Hartmann often says this too
He says that's how Cheney himself wants it pronounced. So he'd back up Matthews too.

9. When I met the Dick, before he was famous, he said Cheeeeee-kneeeee
as he introduced himself.

I think the daughter has decided that the "new" pronounciation is the approved version. And maybe it is. People DO change their names, their minds, and their attitudes.

Matthews isn't wrong about the Cheee-kneee thing, though. That's what he was calling himself during Bush One, when he was a lowly (relatively speaking) SECDEF.

11. Well, apparently the family name
originates in CT - according to an article I read a while back. And here, the family says Chee-nee. So I guess he's got some reason behind it.

And I thought I'd also read that Cheney has pronounced it differently over the years, too.

As far as I'm concerned, if it bugs Dick at all, I'm all for it.

13. There's a little town called Cheney, Kansas
Edited on Sun May-24-09 01:10 PM by checks-n-balances
I know about it from my mother, a KS native, whose family always pronounced it "Cheenee". At least back in the 20th century before Darth selected himself as VP.

Even though Chris isn't my favorite pundit, I would trust his word over Liz's on pretty much any subject.

15. I've seen Lynne Cheney on TV
explicitely stating that the name is pronounced CHEE-NEE.

Maybe they're now taking a page from Ronald REE-GAN (as it was pronounced throughout his movie career).

made me crazy watching him and hearing him say "Cheenee" --- as if any of us care if the Darth Vader's name is pronounced the way they like it. :eyes:
