In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising-and often shocking truths-about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

5. Thanks for the heads up.
For those who have Netflix, it's in their catalog, so you can save it to your queue for when it becomes available.

"Fast Food Nation" was a great book. I found the chapter on scent to be particularly interesting. The author was escorted into a room & blindfolded. Based on scent alone, he was to identify the items in front of him. He identified hot steaming French fries, a freshly grilled burger & luscious strawberries. When his blindfold came off, he was stunned to see that the only thing sitting in front of him were small strips of paper that had been dipped in the various scents. The food producers know how important scent is to taste & have mastered it's use.

Another good documentary is "King Corn." Two young men decide to plant an acre of corn & follow it through the system. It is a fascinating movie. In one scene, one of the men shucks an ear of corn & takes a bite of it. He immediately spits it out. In spite of the millions of acres of corn grown in America, most if it is not edible for humans as is. It is either shipped to feed lots & fed to cows or it is shipped to processing plants to be made into HFCS.

Thanks again OBS!
