For those who think all state employees have medical insurance:

In SC, they sure as hell don't.

I work for a state agency in SC. 50% of the employees are part-time, no benefits. A woman in HR told me that when I point blank asked her.

And other agencies have part-timers, too.

So please don't assume all state employees have this wonderful group insurance.

1. There's no reason to call me out -- I answered your post
I was referring to FT workers. I have worked for NC and VA State, and their insurance is excellent, as is SC's. It is a travesty that all workers in this country don't have insurance, but I will not fault ANY State's insurance.

Very mature having a call out thread and calling me an "ass." Also against DU rules.

6. Sorry, but this is something that really sticks in my craw. Lots of people
in RL think if you work for the state, you've got all these fabulous benefits. That hasn't been true for years.

It really pisses me off that there is this misconception that if you work for the state, you've got it so good. I try to correct this misconception at every opportunity, in RL and online.

I did say in my post:

"Of course, this only applies to those SC employees lucky enough to have insurance." Maybe I should've specified full time employees.

Many of the part-timers really work full time hours or darn close to it. Nonetheless, they are part-time.

When 50% of the employees are part-time, they aren't the minority.

7. Not to mention contract workers, who might easily put in full time
hours but are not on state payroll - even if their checks come from the state. Where I work we've managed to hang onto our full-time and PT workers, but our funds form contractors has been cut by 80%. Not only do they have no benefits, but also have no job security either.

2. Do the full time employees - or is that variable as well?
Part time work with full benefits isn't offered by very many.

4. I know what you're saying. A favorite tactic of state agencies
is to hire someone and classify them part time temporary. They work 40 hours a week, sometimes more; no bennies at all. South Carolina is not alone. Iowa does it too. I speak from experience.
