Shelter Stories
Shelter Stories by Patrick O’Donnell

http://www.muttscomics.com /

These are part of his comic strip “Mutts.” O’Donnell puts “Shelter Stories” in at various times during the year. “Mutts” is a great comic strip about a cat and a dog who are best friends. There are many other characters that come and go. It can be hilarious, moving, or just gentle humor.

1. I love "Mutts. "
The wonderful thing about adopting "rescue" dogs is that they seem to know they've been rescued and they're so grateful!! We have two "rescue" Pyrenees now. We lost our first pair of Pyrs last year. Our first two were wonderful big gentle giants, sweet natured and just a bit aloof. Aloof is a characteristic of these dogs...as you might expect from dogs originally bred to stay on a mountain guarding a herd of sheep, often alone without a human presence for days at a time. But our rescues, who were dumped deep in the country in Pennsylvania hunting country, don't know from aloof. They follow us everywhere they can in the house, schmooze with heads on laps and cuddles (it's an impressive experience being cuddled by dogs this size!) and generallly acting like lap dogs.
Thanks, grits!

I'm so glad I found Mutts. I miss Calvin and Hobbes still.

3. my wife works in a shelter
They get about 20 calls a day now about give ups. Unfortunately they are a small local shelter and cannot take them all in due to lack of space. Dogs that have been rescued see the shelter as a playground. Dogs that have been given up see it as a prison. Luckily they still have a steady stream of people who want to and do adopt some of the dogs.
