Anti-choice exploits Virgin of Guadalupe to co-opt Hispanic vote
In the news coverage of anti-choice protests against President Obama's Notre Dame address, I noticed that some protesters were holding up images of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This is part of their attempt to promote this Mexican icon as the "patroness of the unborn," and is obviously aimed at developing a wedge issue to drive Mexican-American voters away from the Democratic party. I don't think this should be underestimated or ignored, as even a small shift can swing an election. We have certainly seen the disastrous effects of this sort of exploitation with southern evangelicals.
