The Anti-War Origins of Mother's Day

The Mother’s Day Proclamation, written by abolitionist and feminist Julia Ward Howe, is an impassioned “appeal to womanhood” around the world to rally against war.

1. It is also a day celebrated for women who have children in prison.
A lot of prisoners right activist groups have events honoring mother's day.

2. Thank you - I will be passing it on to my daughters.
Yesterday at the blood bank the clerks were amazed that Mother's Day was originally a quest for peace.

3. awesome
“Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
‘We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.’”

Perhaps best known for penning The Battle Hymn of Republic during the Civil War, Howe wrote her Proclamation after the conflict in response to the war’s devastating brutality. As Americans still grieved their dead and nursed their wounded, Howe was further appalled by the “cruel…return to barbarism” she saw unfolding in the Franco-Prussian War.

4. Honor Julia Ward Howe by fighting the commericalization of Mother's Day, too.
:patriot:

Somehow I have a feeling that zealous DUers aren't quite as "up" for that one. :eyes:
