Huckabee: GOP could become 'irrelevant as the Whigs'

http://rawstory.com/blog/2009/05/huckabee-gop-could-become-irrelevant-as-the-whigs/

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, the religious-right's favored Republican during the 2008 presidential campaign and the only politico personally endorsed by action star and destroyer of worlds Chuck Norris, has a grim warning for his Republican colleagues.

From CNN:

In an interview with the California newspaper The Visalia Times-Delta, Huckabee said the GOP would only further decline in influence should it alienate social conservatives — largely considered the most energetic and loyal faction of the party.

"Throw the social conservatives the pro-life, pro-family people overboard and the Republican party will be as irrelevant as the Whigs," he said in reference to the American political party that largely disbanded in the mid 1800s.

"They'll basically be a party of gray-haired old men sitting around the country club puffing cigars, sipping brandy and wondering whatever happened to the country. That will be the end of the party," he said in the interview published Thursday.

If what Huckabee is describing is truly the end of the GOP, I'm pretty sure I personally witnessed that very scene about two years ago in North Texas, at a monthly meeting of the Denton County Republican Women's club, staged in a conference room at the local Golden Corral bufffet.

1. What's Huckabee doing hanging out with Anton Lavey there?
And when did he start wearing that rug?

2. They're between a rock and a hard place
and the Nixon Silent (Racist) Majority and the Reagan Fetus Coalition are bearing their poisoned fruit: the party can't keep them and keep its traditional core and the party can't eject them and hope to be elected to anything, anywhere, as their core voters flee.

They'll either remain the repository for every extremist with an axe to grind or they'll go back to being a minority party, friendly to business and the rich and able to push its agenda only by courting conservative Democrats.

My guess is that it will be the former through the next couple of election cycles.

3. It's the social conservatives who are.....
causing the GOP to sink into irrelevancy, at least according to TIME Magazine:

It's a party of ignorant,sniveling bigots.
Has been for some time, getting more selective by the day - you now have to be extremely ignorant to qualify.

9. A bunch of spoiled children no longer getting their way.
No longer setting or blessing WH policy, and never able to accept the blame that is theirs alone for the 08 trouncing*, they retreat even further back to the "country club republican" meme.

GOP Loyalty Oaths hafta be the next thing. Baha.

10. Isn't it wonderful? The GOP hypocritically courted social conservatives..

as their base and in doing so have alienated the vast majority of the electorate. Now the social conservatives are all they have left. :applause: I love it.

11. Apology and groveling to Limbaugh to follow in three...two...one...
Oh, and if you're so damned worried about the demise of the Republican party, why are you associating with that groin-kicking a-hole Chuck Norris? Most people display more talent blowing their noses than Norris ever did performing on TV and in the movies.
