Two ideas to aid the economy
1) Legalise cannabis. Put it under the exact same rules as alcohol (age restricted, licensed and taxed for sale, no driving under the influence). If you want to grow your own, same way some people brew their own beer, the state never needs to get involved at all.

2) Legalise gambling. In most of the western world, gambling is licensed, regulated and legal. Here in Britain, you can find a bookie in any town and the amount of people with gambling "problems" (not as narrowly defined as addiction but on the same lines) is 0.6% of the population. In the US, nearly any adult can own a firearm but the state doesn't trust you to gamble outside of a few cities. Does this make sense to anyone? Legalise gambling (age-restricted, naturally), impose a small tax on either the stake or the winnings (say 5% and the better chooses which to pay tax on when he makes his bet), take it away from hoodlums and put it in properly regulated establishments. Also removes a revenue stream from organised crime.

1. Both your proposals are immoral and hence not possible in the land of ultimate morality..
We must maintain the strictest moral code in the world else we might lose our status as "the shining city on the hill".

What are you, some kind of extremist libertine?

I really hope that I don't need a sarcasm tag on this post.

ETA: Most clever turn of a phrase I've seen this week (besides "hamthrax." http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=8749480 )

5. Glad to have been of service, Maam.
It's good to have goals, eh?

If you like clever turns of phrase I think you might enjoy balloon-juice, it is a snarkfest the like of which I don't think I've seen before.

10. And besides they don't involve torture
Edited on Sat May-09-09 09:29 AM by Bandit
For this very moral country we find ourselves in, torture is a must... The Only way we can remain safe... The ONLY way.

Incidently, it's been years since I heard anyone use the word "libertine". Congrats.

9. Indeed.
The number of people who would free up positions at companies and start their own companies if they didn't have to stay for healthcare ... the number of people who could go to school for medical positions needed due to single-payer ... the huge amount of money businesses would now have available for expansion due to not having to pay for employee healthcare any more, all these things would help our economy to transition to single-payer healthcare.

11. Well, obviously
I've ranted about the necessity of universal healthcare funded from taxes for years now. After my last rant on the subject, I promised I'd lay off it for a while.

At times the Underground serves us well.

Both of your thoughts would increase revenues.

Walking through the halls of my moms assisted living complex the other day i could swear i smelled pot.

12. You probably did
Amongst it's other medical benefits, pot has a record as a painkiller going back to the dawn of time. Senior citizens were teenagers once, they know that as well as we do.
