3. That really was something else, wasn't it?
The senate begged him to come in right away, yet the w.h. recalcitrance, tied up in their gambling on their own gamesmanship, refused.

Now, suddenly, they realize Leahy doesn't bulldoze easily and accountability to the people is in demand. Better tell a bigger, all encompassing lie and cover all the bases.
Too bad, the whole conversation got ahead of them and panic is setting in.

Even if it weren't true, and I'm sure it is, that the cons have dallied too long, I would be pleased to see Leahy turn the spit slowly, heat on high and listen to the sizzle.
Barbecued pig in a poke on April fool's day!

4. Gosh..can't get a head can they
If the didn't close down for Holy Week, they would be accused of not being Christians, and if they do they are accused of being lax. Oh well what to do, republicans, they can find fault with the way the wind is blowing. If they don't blame Clinton they will blame the democrats.

7. What's the context? Bush itching for the Congress to send him Iraq Supplemental, so he can veto?

8. That's part of it, but the context is right.
The idea is that they have to work out a conference bill, vote on it, get it to his desk so he can veto it.

Then, presumably, the House will take up another bill, a 'clean' one, for the same purpose, something I'm not at all sure about. Meanwhile, I'm sure dems will be saying that if the prez had signed their bill all would be hunky-dorey, so the prez was behaving irresponsibly; and the repubs will be saying that they knew the deadline would function as a "poison pill" and garner a veto, so the dems are behaving irresponsibly.

Mid-late April is the latest preferred date for the final bill to be signed; late May is the drop-dead date. At that point they start fishing about for how to transfer money to support the army in Iraq--a cumbersome process they'll have to do quickly. Money will come from equipment and training purchases, among other sources. I believe that the DOD has said available money from all sources runs out in mid-late July.

9. No veto?
I think the message is that the bill is ok and should not be vetoed. That it will make it look like the people have been heard. But they will just keep with the occupation until the people raise hell again.

12. Perhaps that's why the delay.
(Although the delay was planned in advance, and probably unrelated).

But they say they're not playing chicken. If they want to have the recess say "the bill's fine, don't veto it", in my book they're playing chicken. Given the predictableness of the veto, they stand a risk of having the last minute House bill be seen not as *'s fault, but the dems' fault. Esp. given Obama's 'if he vetoes, we'll pass one without the deadline', showing that at least some dems are expecting the veto.

13. Tell me Obama didn't say that!
"..we'll pass one without the deadline"

I'd much rather gowith Kucinich's : Not nearly good enough even now.

But if the bill is not vetoed we can say that it's all been theatre.
