Who's A Terrorist Now?

4/24/09 03:33 AM ... guards or interrogators prepare to sodomize him with a broomstick .. Not s bad as Abu Ghraib.abu ghraib

23 April 2009 - NBC News today revealed that the Pentagon is preparing to release as many as 2,000 photos, including several dozen which show prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay and other military facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The US government has argued that releasing pictures, even in redacted form, would violate Geneva Convention rules on prisoner treatment by subjecting detainees to humiliation or embarrassment.

According to a government official, at least one photo shows a prisoner shoved up against a wall as military guards or interrogators prepare to sodomize him with a broomstick or fluorescent tube.

The photos are being released as required by a federal lawsuit filed by the ACLU in October of 2003.

The Pentagon has long withheld an unknown number of secret videotapes of CIA torture, some of children being raped and sodomized by guards at Abu Ghraib prison, according to Seymour Hersh. Hersh is the investigative reporter who first revealed the full extent of the torture at Abu Ghraib, which he traced back to the upper reaches of the Bush administration. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who watched some of the tapes, predicted: "If these are ever released to the public, it's going to make matters much worse."

1. i remember the discussion on DU when these first surfaced- only
some members of congress actually saw them, and i distinctly remember they were visibly rattled- and disgusted by what they'd learned. It was after Abu Ghraib i think- but for some reason, they just dropped out of site.

Do you remember this?

thanks for the link-

2. Oh, but we mustn't be partisan!
Today's Oregonian has a puke-worthy editorial about the torture memos. Yes, they concede, torture is bad, mmmmkay? But we must not, not, not, under no circumstances be partisan about this! Yeah, some Democrats appear to have been privy to some of the gorier details, but they were effectively silenced (and shame on them, coughJayRockefellercough) by the administration. So, even though this was a GOP production all the way, it would be partisan to investigate, gather evidence and bring the perpetrators to justice. After all, the Democrats were informed at every step along the way. Though we really don't know if there was full disclosure, partial disclosure or just a bunch of lies strung together under the guise of disclosure. But it would be a grave mistake to make this a partisan dealio.

Here's the scoop for the Oregonian and the other dimwits: If one party puts together and carries out a program against the Constitution, the treaty law of the United States and the standards of the international community, that party could and should expect to be held responsible for its criminal acts. The law isn't partisan. If you break the law, you're liable to the penalty for breaking the law. And if there are Democrats who were involved, then they should be heading off to the Graybar Hotel, too. But really, and for fuck's sake, after watching the hyperpartisan political maneuvering of the Bush administration for eight years, you'd have to be a multiple lobotomy patient to think that this crime has any bipartisan authorship at all.

Bring out all the evidence, identify the perpetrators, and start the trials.

3. I wonder if Hannity would offer to be subject to this for charity?
