There are many people in my universe (in PTA, on my Facebook, in my kid's playgroups, etc) who think
exactly like the bigots in this video. Many of them spout some of the same talking points.

And I do speak up. I won't remain silent. It's wrong.

Lately, some of them have been spouting off about how Christians are persecuted in this country---and this video
drives that point home--and I see through this video why they've got this persecution mantra going on.

It's horrid listening to this stuff. The ignorance is like a bottomless pit. But it's good to go to the source
of the ignorance and understand where it's coming from, so you can better refute it.

I'm a straight former lawyer lady living in the very blue suburb of Alexandria, VA, right across the Potomac from Washington, DC. My world is, I suspect, very different from yours.

So I applaud your courage and your certainty and your willingness to speak up when confronted with that kind of nonsense. We're in the process of finding out that the GOPigs are very bad losers.

If this is of any help to you, Cat, remind them - or, instruct them if they missed the lessons in school - that we are not a Christian country, or a Jewish country, or anything but a secular representative democracy based on the fundamental truth (as our Founding Fathers saw it) that everyone is entitled to be free to practice any religion they choose. Everyone is equally free to choose to practice no religion. And the First Amendment guarantees that the government will never interfere with those choices, but it will also refrain from helping in any way - financially, for instance - to establish any kind of religion. That's why it's called "The Establishment Clause."

Remind them that our country is made up of all kinds of people and if they choose to portray themselves as "persecuted" because of their religious beliefs, then perhaps it's time for the them to understand that it is a great big country, and not everyone shares their religious beliefs. It doesn't mean that they're not free to practice their religion, but neither are they permitted to force their beliefs upon anyone else. They are not right, they are not wrong; neither is anyone else. One point of view, provided it's legal, is as valid as another, and neither prevails.

We are, after all, a secular representative democracy. A republic.

Your mission is honorable, and your kids are lucky to have you as a Mom. This is one of the times when I really love DU, when people who live two entirely different lives can meet and discuss an issue and share their thoughts.

I wish you luck in every possible way, and be secure in your knowledge that your cause is righteous and just. Be safe................
