Police in Orange County say the woman charged with killing and raping an 8-year-old Northern California girl was questioned in connection with two arson fires.

La Palma Police Capt. Jim Enright said Wednesday that 28-year-old Melissa Huckaby was considered a person of interest in two fires set at a home where she lived in 2007.


Enright said a gag order issued Tuesday by a San Joaquin County judge handling the Sandra Cantu murder case prevented him from discussing Huckaby further. He said any investigation would halt while the murder case proceeded.

Authorities said the two fires caused nearly $90,000 in damage.

Huckaby remains in jail without bail on charges that she kidnapped, raped and murdered her 5-year-old daughter's playmate. She is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

do not think a religious person rapes and then kills a child in their grandfather’s church — without the motive for the crime on some level having to do with the church and with the grandfather. It is my guess that Lane harmed Melissa sexually when Melissa was about Sandra’s age. And this crime is some kind of repression turned into horror.
It sounds ritualistic, vengeful and in the works for some time — seeing as Lane (melissa’s grandfather and the pastor of this church) kissed Sandra 2 years ago in a swimming pool and Melissa drugged another 6 year old some months ago.
It feels all interconnected. Young girls, misconduct, Lane and Melissa. Melissa may well have acted alone in this crime, but i suspect her motive involved her history and relationship with her grandfather.
It sounds like she had recently become financially dependent on her grandfather. But had some rage towards him that she thus could not express. If Lane was kissing Sandra when Sandra was six, you can bet Lane did things to Melissa, who he would have had much more access to when she was young.
Lane is way too creepy — making a big show of giving a big sermon about Sandra the day after her body was found– when just two years ago he had been found kissing her in a pool. Perhaps Melissa was even jealous of Sandra, or saw something in her that reminded her of herself — a part she wanted to destroy.
But whatever Melissa did to Sandra before she killed her, I would put money on that Lane did to her years ago.

By the time Huckaby brought the dark hair, blue-eyed girl home, police had already canvassed the streets, knocked on doors and searched the mobile home park’s pool area. The little girl went back to her mother, and that’s the end of the first call.

That same night, someone called police again about the missing child, this time from the local hospital’s emergency room. A doctor had found benzodiazepines—muscle relaxants—coursing through the girl’s 45-pound body. Police filed a report, but made no arrests.
