South Park, Hillary Clinton's vagina, and shark jumping
Not surprisingly, CNN was just promoting this episode.

http://blogcritics.org/archives/2007/03/31/092754.php

Has South Park Finally Jumped The Shark?

In the most recent episode of South Park, “The Snuke,” Eric Cartman suspects a new Muslim student is planning a terrorist attack. The real star of the episode, however, is Hillary Clinton, who has a bomb in her vagina. An agent’s head is eaten up and spit out after he tries to take a peek inside, but this scores nothing but orgasmic pleasure for Hillary. It’s as tasteless and offensive as television can get. South Park has always been tasteless and offensive, but also very intelligent. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

In another recent episode, “Cartman Sucks,” Eric is caught trying to take a picture of himself putting his penis in Butters’ mouth. His friends tell him that it will reverse the gayness of the picture where Eric put Butters’ penis in his mouth while Butters was asleep. Butters, who is blindfolded during the episode, is unaware of the “gayness” of the activity. When Butters’ father catches this episode, Butters is sent to a camp to cure his gayness.

Am I, as well as other South Park viewers, really that hard up for entertainment? Or do we just enjoy watching a train wreck? The point of almost every South Park episode is to highlight the hypocrisy of society. But hasn’t South Park made this point over and over and over before?

1. I thought that was one of South Parks greatest episodes
made better by the fact I'm a diehard 24 fan.

2. "WE" support Edwards" someone posted when attacking Stewart for the vanity
Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 10:09 AM by The Count
candid shots of Edwards primping. But attacking another Dem candidate - oh, so funny!
(for the record, I support neither and South Part jumped the shark a long time ago)
Hypocrisy doesn't look good on us either. What's good for IWR sponsor, is good for IWR voter - although the South Park was in such bad taste we turned it off.

6. That's the element I'm missing.
I watched the very first episode of 24 years ago, which was just enough for me to recognize the clock motif and the loopy camera.

I found it a rather blah episode. The whole snatch nuke thing was amusing for a second, but I was then left wondering what it had to do with Hillary, and what they might be parodying.

The "Not any more, you're not!" schtick was very funny, though.

3. Do you expect a show like South Park have any "party loyalties"? It is
Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 10:09 AM by bluerum
all about, in the end, (no pun intended) ratings.

South Park has always used the element of shock and surprise - how twisted is the next scene going to be - we must wait and see.

Hillary is as good a target as any politician.

24? 24 just plain sucks. That simpleton theatrical device got old after the first 3 episodes of the first season.

edit sp.

5. Party loyalties? Wake me when they attack * for any of HIS idiocies
Because so far I only see ben Affleck, barbara Streisand and Al Gore lampooned there. The only time they wee anti-war was...during Clinton (Bigger, Longer and Uncut). Now, they love the war!

11. You would expedt them to mine the ultra-rich source of material that
is the republic party wouldn't you.

So full of sexual predation and outright thievin. Political gaffs and lies abound.

I did like Team America though.

13. Well that certainly isn't true
I have seen Bush lampooned on South Park. Remember the ladder to heaven episode. Bush and his cabal think there are WMD hidden in the clouds of heaven, so they want to bomb heaven to get to the "WMD".

15. As libertarians, they strictly criticize religion. Everything else is A-OK with them
I especially remember an episode where the "Rich" (Blacks) were ruining South Park. In the end, the good citizens scared them with ...sheets. it was so very droll! :sarcasm:

9. Well, imagine that it was Laura. Wonder what Rush would say?
After all, it's LAURA'S husband---or is it Condi's?---who is waging an illegal invasion and occupation.

7. I agree
The show has been in a downward spiral for a while. The last time I truly enjoyed South Park was the Tom Cruise closet show and the goodbye to Chef.
I'm not a Hillary for Prez fan and I thought that last show was not just bad......it was almost unwatchable. I don't know if Parker and Stone can pull out of the nosedive and that "sucks balls."

10. Yeah I think so
"Has South Park Finally Jumped The Shark?"

I think it did. I'm a big SouthPark fan, and I don't even mind that they skewer Dems and Environmentalists from time to time. But the Snuke was just stupid, and it's a recycled idea. Remember the Oprah's Snatch episode. The whole concentrating on body parts as the story line thing was funny once, but now it's dull and quite stupid.

14. Try juvenile.
Never liked South Park, but could tolerate it when others watched it. Haven't been able to do that for some time now, and thank goodness the person that use to watch it can't stand it now either. The shark has been jumped many times over.

12. South Park jumped the shark by the third episode
In my opinion.

They had one shtick, and once you got it it was the same damn episode everytime. There were amusing bits, there always are, but it never went anywhere.

"...also very intelligent"??

Same could be said about Ann Coulter, I suppose.
South Park is meant to be offensive, and you've been offended.
Quit your bitchin', or change the channel.

17. I've never actually watched South Park although I am
of course aware of it. Not being a viewer, I obviously didn't see the episode you mention. Still I can't help but wonder, with the era of the Clenis still fresh in our memories, will this South Park episode mark the advent of the Clagina?

19. I don't think this episode was making fun of Clinton
First off she's portrayed with real leadership qualities - when her secret service guys tell her that there might be a terrorist attack she's resolute about going on with her rally and she expresses faith in her aides ability to do their jobs. Okay, it's true they rib her about the accent thing, but big deal, that's not really that hurtful.

What I thought they were really making fun of (besides '24') was the obsession and fear of Hillary Clinton's vagina. Vagina dentata is rooted in the fear of strong women. From wikipedia: "The vagina dentata appears in the myths of several cultures, most notably in several North American Indian tribes. Erich Neumann relays one such myth in which 'A meat-eating fish inhabits the vagina of the Terrible Mother; the hero is the man who overcomes the Terrible Mother, breaks the teeth out of her vagina, and so makes her into a woman.'”

I thought it was damn funny actually.

Sometime they provide clever commentary on society. Sometimes they're just being juvenile and trying to shock people.

Jesus people, lighten up. Cartman is ALWAYS the source of ridicule for his fucked up views--he's never praised. He's a giant caricature of the right and a source of ridicule.

27. Satire and sarcasm are lost on wide swath of the American populace.
I can understand missing it in the written form, but damn,Colbert and South park are blatant satire and people still think Cartman is a real person and Colbert isn't mocking the Right incessantly.

I can see why the show wouldn't be for everyone, and that's cool. But to attach the importance that some do to it each week is scary if you ask me.

Can you imagine Oscar Wilde trying to survive on DU? :)

Me thinks I am not the one satire impaired. Why not add Dennis Miller in the melee while you are pretending the apples and oranges are indistinguishable?
