Woman to police: 'There's a dog taped to the fridge'
Boulder couple arrested in dispute-driven animal cruelty case

By John Aguilar (Contact)
Tuesday, April 14, 2009

BOULDER, Colo. — Police found an 8-month-old puppy — its feet, snout and tail bound in clear packing tape, a plastic bag and elastic hair ties — stuck to the side of a refrigerator in a Boulder home Tuesday morning, the apparent victim of a domestic dispute between its owner and his girlfriend.

Abby Toll, 20, was arrested on suspicion of felony animal cruelty after telling police she taped the puppy, a shiba inu named Rex, to the fridge because she was angry at her boyfriend for not getting rid of his pet after it had bitten her.

---------------------
Toll bound the dog’s legs, tail and snout with clear packing tape and elastic hair ties and stuck him — upside down — to the side of the fridge with more packing tape.

-------------

A fight ensued, and the dog remained taped to the fridge for about 20 minutes, until police arrived in response to someone reporting the couple’s yells.

The officers said Rex was in severe pain after being cut down.

“When Officer (Richard) French got the first layer of tape off, I observed the dog’s paws were bound together with several black elastic hair ties,” one of the responding officers wrote. “There were also hair ties bound around the dog’s ears and snout. When the elastic hair ties were removed from the dog’s paws, there was a large indention where the bands were, and his paws were swollen. Rex just lay motionless, but breathing.”

The officers also noticed a large patch of hair missing above the dog’s tail, which Toll told them was the result of an accidental scalding a few weeks earlier.

1. It's because of things like this that I could never be a police officer
When I arrested her, we'd be taking the long way back to the station.

9. I don't get it...
My family got our puppy from the SPCA last summer, and we would NEVER contemplate something so heinous. If you don't want a pet, take it to the SPCA or a shelter...but not this... though anyone who would do something like this obviously has some mental issues.

23. I think she was trying to punish her boyfriend by torturing the dog.
Which of course, doesn't lessen the heinousness of the crime.

14. women can be muderous, abusive, nasty, psychopath criminals too...
..no exceptions to that based on gender. I hope that little baby gets a good home and SHE ends up locked up somewhere and prevented from EVER having a pet herself. E V E R. What a DISGUSTING excuse for a human being.

11. This is a Shiba Inu-

The Shiba Inu is the little cousin of my Akita.

They are both independent breeds, and incredibly loyal to their families. The Shiba is smaller and faster than an Akita, and needs more run time.

Very intelligent dogs, with huge hearts.

This is a case where they should have done to them, what they did. An eye for an eye.

16. The hand in my Akita picture is my 16 year old son-

The black head in the lower right, my lab.

Baby is a beautiful and kind animal. She's graceful, and brave. She protects me when DH is on shift at night, and is smart as a whip.

The Shiba Inu is the Japanese breed that is like a smaller version of my Baby, all the positives in one small firecracker package.

I desperately hope justice is served for that sweet puppy, they don't bite "packmates" unless antagonized. Since the pup was familiar with them, they were "packmates".

That story made my heart hurt. I'd hug Baby but she's sleeping about 5 feet from me.

Edited to add, Rex was injured and only bared his teeth and growled when she tried to apply the cream to him. Also, if he was so vicious and dangerous, he never would have permitted her to bind him. Also, Shiba Inu's and Akita's are both very finicky about where they go to the bathroom. There would NOT have been feces and urine all over the place, it would have been in one spot because that's what they prefer.

She's (Toll) is disgusting. (Edit again- She meaning the wasting pile of larvae leftovers that taped the innocent puppy to the fridge)

24. Former Akita mom, aka "big cousin of the Shibu" weighing in.
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 12:45 AM by susanna
These breeds are not for the lazy amongst us, IMHO. My late girl was a handful, I'll admit. She drove me to distraction sometimes, but her loyalty was never a question. I miss her every single day. She was a big light in my life.

These breeds require time, love, patience and supremely consistent discipline. If one invests these things, they become the most loyal companions one will ever know. If one doesn't, well, I'd recommend that they quit griping, because they've already failed.

My heart hurts reading this story. It's so freaking senseless. Why would anyone even think to hurt these amazing creatures? :-(

on edit: proper tense

I'm sorry for your loss of such a wonderful packmate.

My girl still lives in my heart, and I thank you for your compassion.

I will watch this case closely; I can't help it. Thanks, Mother of Four, for your response. And I do cross my fingers with you...sounds weird, but I think you know what I mean.
