How did the DU battle ground go from guns to pirates so quickly?
Last week with all the shootings we were fighting about gun ownership, now we are fighting about pirates. I wonder what it will be next week.

I think the issue is of less consequence than the willingness to fight each other.

They get to say "kill them all!" without being accused of supporting a Republican president.

8. I don't watch TV myself, but from what I've been able to put together from context clues
It's all about what the rich white people on 24 hour cable news stations are talking about today.

It's an old pattern that I've seen repeated ever since I started hanging out here. People who apparently obsess about TV start posting about something being shown on TV. Other people disagree and present a point of view that is not being shown on TV. The TV watchers hyperventilate and create all sorts of strawmen and get into a moral panic and accuse all of DU of horrible inhuman things and claim that said accusations are based on great quantities of posts that no one but the accusing posters can see.

One example I remember is when the host of one of their TV shows died. Apparently, pointing out that he wasn't a saint meant that you hated him and danced on his grave and had no respect for the dead and that you were a vile reptile with no sense of human decency. And then there was the time that pointing out that irrational hatred of Iran's leader might be a bit influenced by propaganda meant that you were in love with him and wanted to have his babies. Or when thinking that the Constitution did not guarantee all US citizens the right to get paid millions of dollars to air their opinions on a radio show while forbidding boycotts meant that you were a fascist who wanted to destroy the first amendment and send people to reeducation camps for saying racist things.

It's really an awesome demonstration of the power of that other less interactive screen.

14. I tend to agree...
I don't recall OPs on the issue of Somalia's fishing waters, etc, prior to the rescue of the captain yet Somali piracy is not new, has been a problem for much longer than last Wednesday.

20. Thanks for the links!
They made for very interesting reading given they are from 3 months ago. I see the issue of the fishing and dumping was raised in some of these threads but garnered little response as opposed to the recent reaction which makes sense given the 24/7 news coverage given the capture of the American captain.

I stand corrected, unequivocally, in my mistaken belief the issue had not surfaced until this latest incident.

Thanks again for your work in finding them for me, it is much appreciated.

15. DU has always the been the home of an enormous contingent of "Shiny Object of the Day" folks.
If it's on the Tube, it must be important. If it's not on the Tube, it isn't real.

DUers will vehemently deny that they are being led around by the corpo-media, but the patterns of discussion here easily disprove that.

18. People come to a message board and get into fights because they like to do so.
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 06:40 AM by TexasObserver
The topic really doesn't matter. Many of the long, drawn out arguments here are driven by people who think their opinion about every topic is religiously correct, to the exclusion of all others.

Some come here to discuss topics that matter, but the most contentious interchanges are driven mainly by obsessive compulsive people who simply cannot disengage after four or five exchanges with the same person.

Guns, pirates, smoking, 16 year olds eaten by a tiger - the topic doesn't matter when dealing with a person who cannot discuss topics rationally. I liken it to discussing anything with an alcoholic while they're drunk. It's a complete waste of time, so why do it? If I think someone is emotionally unwell and incapable of discoursing sanely, I put them on ignore and forget them.
