Driving along dark country roads and using a high-powered spotlight, the group spies a hapless animal meandering along the shoulder.

Armed with baseball bats and clubs, the teens leap out of the vehicle and attack the animal, clubbing it to death. As proof of the kill, the teens take pictures of their quarry in order to accumulate points in this twisted game.

This game of “coon bashing” is being played out along rural roads in Dodge and Columbia counties, law enforcement officials say.

On Friday, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials — acting on a tip received by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department — apprehended a group of Beaver Dam High School students and their friends on suspicion of “coon bashing” near Pardeeville and Rio.

Got a bunch of future serial killers right there.

29. I've seen "much worse" happen.
50 years ago in the rural South where I grew up, white boys would go "n_______ knocking," in which one perp in the back of the pickup truck wielded a long pole to whack a black pedestrian behind the knees as the driver overtook him on a rural road. I suspect there were blows to the backs and heads of the victims as well.

I sometimes relate this to someone who starts reminiscing about the Good Old Days.

What is wrong with these people?
Yesterday, someone posted a story about an ex-boyfriend who broke into the ex-girlfriend's house and killed her dog by cooking it in the oven and now this.

The amount of violence occuring in this country is almost too much to bear.

14. Our local news had a video and story about someone encouraging their dog to attack and kill a cat
They were trying to determine where it happened. I don't know where they got the video. I saw some of it, they posted the less graphic parts in hopes someone might recognize or know the area.

28. As was I, minus any sports fascination...and I saw plenty of this mentality growing up...
...in the midwest, usually among those who were considered the pillars of the community, the most popular in school, stars of the athletic team, etc.

My point is simple; given how many bullies and sadist shitbags I saw rise to the top of the social hierarchy in several schools between IA and IL in the 80s, I seriously doubt all of them were destined for serial killer-dom ... more likely climbing corporate ladders, and fulfilling middle management positions in the McJob indestroy.

In fact, the vast majority of them probably ARE climbing corporate ladders.

These sick fucks are definitely sociopaths. No one else could so casually cause pain and suffering to a living creature.

40. That's what I was alluding to: it's comforting to categorize 'them' as "serial killers"
When in actuality it speaks to something that's unfortunately more familiar in the pop culture/public mind. The ones involved with this type of animal killing are of the same mindset of those who invent hazing horrors in their schools and athletic teams - a classic example of how the supposed 'best' can show their true colors.

Seriously though, if I ever saw somebody beating a little animal to death, I very well might give them some lead which when picked out of the body could be used as fishing weights.

23. Little shits! There are folks there in Wisconsin
who would stop and give those boys a bit of their own medicine if they caught them doing that. Sadly, they'd be the ones who got in trouble, rather than the boys.

Bring back the stocks in the public square for this kind of crap, I say. Put these shitheads in the stocks and put a bucket of rotten eggs where anyone can grab one and throw it at them. Leave them in there about 8 hours on a nice hot Summer day, then send them home to their mothers.

27. They should just be hunting them with dogs
I don't want garbage eating raccoons running around, spreading rabies, biting dogs, and spreading out trash. I don't see why hitting them with bats would be so much worst than hunting them with dogs or traps. I can't imagine a raccoon would be alive after more than one or two hits. So it seems fairly humane to the animal. At worst all they were doing was violating hunting laws by using a spot light, which may be legal in wisconsin while hunting raccoons.

42. This is not hunting. It's killing.
Hunting is done per federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and the hunter gets some use out of the animal after harvesting it. (meat, hide, etc.) This is just plain killing for the thrill of it, contrary to all laws and regs, as well as a waste of natural resources.

These little shits should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

43. And if the animals in question aren't covered by regs?
What's the difference then?

I understand that hunters like to glorify the killing they do under the auspices of a sport, but you're not honestly presenting a "No True Scotsman" approach to deciding who gets to be called a hunter, are you? I've known several ("sport-")hunters who freely admit that they don't use the meat from the animals they kill.

51. Lots of hunting doesn't involve eating the meat
My sister's neighbors would regularly give her deer carcasses as their wives didn't like venison, but they loved to hunt & mount the heads.

i don't see a large difference between that and this.
