PUMAs back in the news...
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 01:54 PM by DRoseDARs
...but it's not what you think. ;)

Via Next Big Future blog:
General Motors and Segway to Make PUMAs for 2012
http://nextbigfuture.com/2009/04/general-motors-and-seg...

Blurb from Segway's site:
"Built off of the proven reliable and safe technology you find in Segway Personal Transporters (PTs), the prototype truly does expand upon the exhilarating riding experience. It increases capacity to two passengers in a seated position; capable of carrying them up to anywhere between 25 and 35 mph (40 - 56 kph) for anywhere between 25 and 35 miles (40 - 56 km) on a single charge.* It does so while taking advantage of the unparalleled maneuverability and advanced control you get through Segways use of dynamic stabilization (balancing technology). Add in know-how with large format lithium-ion batteries and you have something thats zero emissions during operation - likely only costing about $.60 in electricity to recharge."

Edit: Damn it! Someone already posted the news in a less funny and less interesting way!

1. Now that's what they should have done in the first place!
My complaints with the original Segway were that it was useless for handicapped people who needed personal transportation, it was too slow for the street, it was too fast for the sidewalk, and it offered neither protection from the elements nor cargo room.

In short, it was useless except as mega warehouse transport for managers.

The one being shown is one I might be tempted to buy. The range is adequate for 90% of my driving and the second seat would be fine for most of the stuff I have to haul.

7. Actually, there are USPS carriers who absolutely love these things.
Those lucky enough (or unlucky enough if you like) to still have walkable routes say they're great.

2. I have a cousin who was a McCain voting PUMA
Talked to her last week, in fact, and she is still squawking about Obama's "lack of experience" (how long of a shelf life does that line of criticism have?)

8. I was going to make a low-brow joke earlier to force it back in-context, but thought better of it.
I thought imprudent to ask if the cousin is a two-seater or how many miles to a charge she gets... ;)
