US Minority Business Advocates Wage 'War' On 'Card Check' Bill

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- A coalition of U.S. minority business advocates Monday declared war on legislation that would allow unions to more easily organize, a move that disregards attempts by labor and some businesses to reach a compromise.

"We will not compromise with disaster," National Black Chamber of Commerce President Harry Alford said. "This is war."

Leaders from the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, among others, joined Alford in urging Congress to oppose the legislation. The coalition vowed to educate lawmakers and minority community members about the potential negative impact of the bill.

The proposed Employee Free Choice Act, also known as the "card check" bill, would have workers sign cards rather than vote in secret ballot elections, streamlining the process by which unions could form.

The coalition took aim at a particular provision in the legislation that would call for mandatory arbitration to set first-contract terms if companies and unions can't agree within 120 days.

The group said it is inappropriate for government-appointed arbitrators to determine the wages and benefits that companies will ultimately provide to workers. "This is tantamount to a coup or power grab," Alford said. " Entrepreneurs don't take the risks and work hard hours to give it all up."

7. Hi there, my friend. When I was trying to run this down,
it looks like there are Black Chambers of Commerce all over the country and it looks like these people tried to pretend to represent them all. Either this is a scam or the national leaders are running wild. Wouldn't be the first time a national tier did something like this, would it?

2. This coalition of "minority business advocates" represents very few people.
Apart from a handful of elites, most minorities -- as well as most whites -- stand to gain from the card-check bill, and they know it.

4. Check this out:
Exxon still funding global warming sceptics: Greenpeace

Exxon has argued that its position on global warming has been widely misunderstood

NEW YORK: Exxon Mobil Corp gave over $2mn in 2006 to groups Greenpeace called global warming sceptics even as the oil company campaigned to improve its climate-unfriendly image.
Nevertheless, Exxon, the world’s largest publicly traded company, cut its donations to these groups by more than 40% from 2005.

The company still funds about 40 “sceptic groups,” according to the report from Greenpeace, but Exxon disputed that many of the organisations were “global warming deniers.”

The groups listed include: the American Enterprise Institute, the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, and the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Many of them concern themselves with a wide range of issues.

8. At least this isn't the usual "only the union leaders want it" theme
I hate it when republicans try to stand up for the union members when they start talking about how the secret ballot actually helps labor.
