It's crazy talk to suggest that any country would.

It would be suicide by that country and I believe it's just alot of hot air to gin up more fear and more spending on military hardware....

2. It is suicidal to use a suicide bomb or fly a plane into a building
Not everbody is sane. not everyone cares about living.

that being said I do think we can cut the budget and spend our money wiser.

Do we need 8 aircraft carriers? I think no. Maybe retire (mothball in case they are needed) the 3 oldest ones.

Do we need 2000 nuclear warheads? No. Maybe 900 would be enough.

43. Who thinks those men on those planes would have done what they did if ...
...their own family members were on the planes with them? I bet none.

Any government who shot a missile at us would be causing their own families to be killed so they wouldn't do it either.

See the difference?

Well, there you have it. You've answered your own question. Desperation makes people and countries do desperate things.

I think there is far less chance of that happening now. However, how many world leaders can you name that might conceivably be suffering from mental illness?

10. I don't buy it.
Yes, there are crazy individuals. But heads of state giving the go ahead to launch on the US? No.

Kim Jong Ill is going to allow a launch on the US? The "leaders" of Iran are going to allow a launch on the US. Knowing full well that it means the end of all life in their countries...

I don't buy it.

I don't believe anyone should have nukes but as it is, if a country eventually develops them, then they need to be addressed with diplomacy. Military action only pushes off the inevitable and makes enemies in the mean time....

15. The point of missile defense is not really defense.
They are just using that to sell it to the public. The real purpose is to allow us to make a first strike and not get hit back. It undermines the whole Mutually Assured Destruction stalemate that has kept us alive all these years, and that is why Russia is so upset about it. Oh, and it's also a good way for defense contractors to suck billions of dollars out of the US treasury.

Let's play the fear card to the morons.

N. Korea launches suped-up firecracker. We can sell it to the fools hiding under their beds as proof we need a "missile defense" that sucks billions more resources away from where it's really needed.....

Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 06:26 PM by stray cat
then we have to decide whether to destroy a country of innocent civilians because of the action of a few. Also, countries can sell weapons including nuclear to fringe groups - particularly given the poverty in places like N. Korea.

25. When I was young...
When I was young, I read impending attacks by the Evil Soviets into just about every news report I watched, plane in the sky, and even number or people walking into or out of a government building. i had allowed my own personal paranoia to color my world view.

As I've gotten older, I realize that for the most part, people simply want to live and love-- even those people in North Korea. And a nuclear attack anywhere in the world (let alone one directed at the U.S.) would deny that life and love to those who value it most.

It's an interesting scenario for cocktail parties and basement pot-party pow-wows (not the Sham-Wow-- two different things... :P ), but for a mind that doesn't salivate over dystopian, post-apocalyptic, rapture-ready scenarios based on badly written, hack-authored science fiction novellas, the probability of NK launching an attack on the U.S. is just a few degrees higher than the possibility that my urine will be completely composed of cheddar cheese tomorrow morning.
