3. Very interesting. My uncle ran his own hatchery back in the 40-50s

and did not have all the automation but basically the same system of hatching and sexing.

4. We purchase chickens for our backyard flock from a hatchery

that specializes in Heritage breeds like Silver Spangled Hamburg and Buff Orpington. In a holdover form the recent rural past, the chicks are packed in a cardboard box and shipped via airmail to the nearest post office for pick-up. As long as there are at least 25 chicks in the box, they are able to keep each other warm. They survive on the absorbed yolk during shipping.

13. We have a 10 yr old SSHamburg. She is the old lady of the flock. Did you ever notice

SSH's speak a different language? Rather than saying "look look look look look", they, mine at least, said "dah dot dot dah". I thought perhaps it was Morse Code. Seriously though, my SSh's speak differently.
