36. In our home he's fondly referred to as "Keefers"!
A well-earned congrats to the very first progressive on an entirely progressive show. He was the ONLY one who dared kick shins and paved the way - as well as lobbied for - The Rachel Maddow Show, and the "softening" of Mega-Mouth Matthews (who is still tugging too much to the right for my taste, though).

May there be another healthy, happy strong seven years, Keefers!! :toast: :bounce: :loveya:

21. Maybe he's going to have a 2-hour show.
Or that he and Rachel will have hour-and-a half shows? Or that Cenk will be the 10pm host.
Or that he will challenge Bill OReilly to a duel!

19. so you don't think the quality is dropping?
Somerby does, at the Daily Howler.

I have not seen them in a couple of months since dropping cable. Somerby says they are disintegrating.

http://www.dailyhowler.com/index.shtml

He has been a harsh critic of KeithO in the past, but his complaints seem to have some merit. What do regular viewers here think?

Here's a summary of Somerby

"Let’s say it again: At present, we think the disintegration of our liberal cable programs is the most important story in media."

"Our nation is badly in need of “narratives of what happened (or is happening).” But let’s be honest: That simply isn’t what these two increasingly useless programs are about.

What are these two liberal programs about? We’re going to take a bit more care as we try to answer that question. But the mainstream press press corps is very weak—and the “conservative” world is a screaming joke. If we don’t informed by progressive media, we simply won’t get informed at all. And this nation is going to die if it gets any more dumb.

As Dorgan said: We badly need narratives—real understanding. In our view, these liberal programs rarely provide that. They serve us comfort food—and jokes. And sometimes, they lie in our faces. We think of a clowning host last night as we make that unfortunate statement."

We need real understanding, but these programs, perhaps like the other "liberal programs" - Stewart and Colbert, offer us "comfort food - and jokes."

Here's what he means by 'comfort food'

"Increasingly, clowning and comfort food is what these liberal shows are about. We get to clown around with our liberal pals. They tell us how dumb the other tribe is."

22. Somerby has always hated, resented and been envious of Olbermann.
He never liked him from the beginning. He has ALWAYS had one word for Olbermann: "useless."

Personally, I think it's because Somerby himself is a humorless, pompous bore who thinks he alone is uniquely qualified to Save the Democracy, and doesn't want anyone else to get the credit.

30. Sour grapes.
He wishes he had Keithie's audience.

As far as other "liberal" shows, Jon and Rachel are the two best interviewers on TV, bar none. Keithie might be, as well, but no one from the other side dares confront him!

Was it "comfort food" when Rachel elicited a confession on the air from Rod Blagojovich, or when Jon tore What's-His-Name (Mad Money) a new one? That was some good television, and great reporting, too!

32. Humor
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 01:36 PM by AlbertCat
Y'know, part of the RW's problem is they have no sense of humor. They think racial and fag jokes are still funny. Seen ANY RW wit lately? Buckley is gone.

As far as showing how dumb the other guy is....there's something about giving themselves enough rope....Olbermann and Maddow just have to show clips and repeat their words.

I find Keith's feud with Bill-O a bit tedious at times but it can be fun if not too involved. Otherwise, Keith's true value is he showed TV execs that liberal rebuttal to Repug insanity gets ratings.

APRIL FOOLS!

48. our humor is based on hate though
We hate the "other tribe" so we laugh at them. It's kinda junior high. If the Jets get some video of a Shark tripping and falling at lunch, that will be played forever. There's a certain entertainment value in that, but it's a long way from a substantive policy critique and it's a long way from being informed about issues. Our national discourse then continues to be dumbed-down and mean-spirited.

I wish I could go back and locate some of the brazen quotes early on from one of their execs on the profitability of the Iraq war and how they didn't mind that it appeared it was going to last longer than than the 2 week cake walk that had been projected.

Thanks for the link.

45. Keith
Keith was calling out Republicans back in the era when Americans should "watch what they say".

Phil Donahue's show on MSNBC had great ratings but the network pulled it when Phil started questioning the propaganda leading up to the utterly unnecessary Iraq War.

Keith was forceful and reported on stuff that was only seen in blogs or in media outside of the USA, where there is not so much corporate fascism as there is here in the states.

Keith was going after these guys when there was a very real tangible possibility he would be fired for what he was saying. What Keith has said and the times he has said it takes raw courage, simply put. Keith values his principals dearly and he's as uncompromising in that as Frank Zappa was about his principals.

Frank is gone, but thankfully people like Kieth carry the banner of intelligent independent American thought.

-90% jimmy

PS - Jamie Heinemann must have had some jet lag last night. Thankfully, Adam was still capable of live TV quick bantering. I did not know Keith was a fan of Mythbusters? Good for him. They rawk, even though me and my wife miss the tattooed blond lady from a few seasons ago.
