Poll question: When there is a breaking news story, where do you turn to first? (web wise)
I'm looking for the FIRST website you turn to when you hear a breaking story... to get the raw facts. Who do you click FIRST

Yes, you have it backwards for me.
If you go to DU, you immediately learn where to go to get the best information. If you tune into CNN, you have to wade through the bullshit to get to the barn.

35. Yes, seriously. CNN can be terrible. LBN has standards.
First LBN, then other major outlets to double fact check.

3. DU.
DU will have everything that the others have.

We have people who live on the news wires, and some DUer(or many) are always watching the cable news. Not much gets by this group.

7. "Other". I go online, find an all-news radio station in the area where the event happened
and try to tune in there.

11. It's easiest to type www.cnn.com. That's how I end up there. lol.
Then eventually I discover that CNN is behind the curve, slow on the upload of new info...go to other sources that have more current info.

9. It depends on where it happened.
Time of day, etc.

If it's local, I'll search on the TV for the best coverage; if it happened in the US, I'll go to DU; anywhere else probably BBC, CNN or fark.

15. DU first? Bizarre.
This place is great for discussion, but all the "news" here is second- or third- hand, and during breaking events the place tends to be stuffed to the gills with unsubstantiated rumors.

Anyway, I keep refreshing cnn.com to read the breaking news banners.

17. Newswire feed ...

There's no *one* place I go. I access a newswire feed that draws on multiple, unedited sources, read those, and then do some mental calculus to figure out where I need to go to get some basic analysis from genuine experts.

I venture to DU when I actually have some awareness of what's going on and what it might mean. My observations of DU over the years is that so-called breaking stories tend to be links from the other major news sources you mention in the poll, with the addition of, sadly, Politico, Drudge, and several other blogs that often themselves reference CNN, the NYT, WP, et al.

The raw stories coming in across a wire are often inaccurate in minute details, but I've found I generally gain a better understanding of the broad facts before an editor gets a hold on the story.

21. There are few facts when a story is breaking
It has become an issue unto itself with todays fast communications. In the rush to get something out first, there are often many incorrect statements instead of actual facts. I guess it keeps the tin foil hat folks happy though :D

I've found NO news aggregator service that even comes close to the breadth of resources on DU. Also, no news aggregator posts from all the different news outlets as on DU. Next question?

27. Same here - and I love that I can see which were the first stories posted
AND that I can see how many (90% or more) are the identical stories from the wire services used by most of the papers.

30. DU isn't "news" it's "meta-news" or commentary.
It's people talking about the news from other PRIMARY sources - at least by and large - there are occasionally original stories here but huge breaking stories are usually broken somewhere else. I usually go to CNN.com

After that I check My Yahoo, DU, Huff Po and Slate usually several times each day. I also get emails of breaking stories from several regional news outlets.
