Canada demands apology from Fox News
2009-03-23 19:12:03 -

TORONTO (AP) - Canada's defense minister demanded an apology Monday from Fox News for crass and disgusting comments on one of its shows about the country's involvement in Afghanistan.
In the segment that aired last week on the late-night program Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld panelists suggest Canadian soldiers need time off for manicures and pedicures.

Canadian Lt. Gen. Andrew Leslie had said the military would need a one-year break from operations after Canada's mission in Afghanistan ends in 2011.

Defense Minister Peter MacKay requested an apology Monday before attending a repatriation ceremony with the families of four soldiers who were killed last Friday. So far, 116 Canadian soldiers have died in Afghanistan. Canada has about 2,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, and has borne the brunt of much of the violence in the volatile south.
Leslie's comments that the military would need a year's hiatus to regroup and refurbish, served as a launching pad for members of the Fox panel to mock Canada.

The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants, Gutfeld said, adding: Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army. Another panelist, Doug Benson, said he didn't even know Canadian troops were in Afghanistan. MacKay called it an uninformed view.

It is crass. It is insensitive and it is in fact disgusting given the timing where Canada is just receiving back four fallen heroes, MacKay told CTV News.

MacKay noted that President Barack Obama has expressed gratitude for Canada's contribution. The American president thanked the families of Canadian soldiers and declined to ask war-weary Canada to stay longer in Afghanistan when he visited Ottawa last month.

I don't know how Canada finds the will to continue in Afghanistan. It seems like every other day we read about some tragedy there involving Canadian troops.

17. Well a few offices, actually ....
Defense Minister Peter MacKay's, CTV and Fox's Red Eye. I was suprised to see both CBC anc CTV with it on their front page today, but I know there are plenty of pissed off and hurt Canadians who probably did too, especially when many of us have family serving who knew those four killed a few days ago and others before then. I doubt it'll change anything for the dickwads at Fox, but they can expect to get a lot more mail when they disrespect families and whole nations mourning the loss of soldiers whose only mission was to try to help in such a difficult situation.

20. I sent one off to Red Eye.
For a few moments there, I thought you actually worked in the office of Peter MacKay and that you'd sent it to him via interoffice email, which made me wonder why the hell you'd be posting here. But then I realized that I read your post wrong somehow.

8. I guess you could call it that
in the same vein as Limbaugh and Beck and the rest of the hacks that occupy that shithole network.

9. That's the lamest of excuses. "Joke." "Entertainers." My ass.
They say those things with the intention of propagating the idea. Fuck 'em with Washington's Monument sprinkled with ground glass.

3. Don't ask Fox to appologize, just take them off the air.
They don't even pretend to do legitimate news, so why should they be licensed as a cable news network? They only do propaganda. Just take them off the air and maybe the other news networks might straighten up and do news again.

6. At the very least take them out of the basic cable and satellite packages
or offer an alternative as an option. I have to get the 3rd tier package from Dish network if I want MSNBC but FOX is in every package they offer whether I want it or not.

4. The only will Canada has to be in Afghanistan currently...
is probably solely to "honor" treaty obligations for the sake of leverage to obtain a seat at the UN Security Council. Beyond that, when 2011 rolls around, I think they are going to be out of there immediately.

10. Fox host apologizes for mocking of Canadian Forces
The host of an over-the-top, late-night Fox network show has apologized for any disrespect he may have caused to the Canadian military with a recent segment on his intentionally inflammatory program.

"The March 17th episode of Red Eye included a segment discussing Canada's plan for a 'synchronized break,' which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts," host Greg Gutfeld said in a statement issued Monday.

"However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize.

"Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner," he added.

19. Well we burned down the original 'White' house
back in the day.

Per capita Canada has lost twice as many troops as the US in Afghanistan, and as usual we are shoved into the hot spots first c.f. Dieppe WWII.

PS: we celebrate the return of out dead in a very un-Canadian way, with public parades and flag-draped coffins.

You're welcome.

Sorry DU - just venting

21. Dieppe
We volunteered for Dieppe...We needed a chance to show our stuff as we were not getting the respect...I think it was Currie who pushed for us to lead the Dieppe raid...big mistake as that was what really brought the war home here.

18. Obviously Gutfield is on the "other side" of the war in Afghanistan

Since he obviously thinks our allies are "funny" for fighting and dying there.

22. Take a break?
I do not think we should be taking a break from Afghanistan. Fighting terrorism should not be left up to only the U.S. we should be doing our part as well...I don't hear them saying we need a break
