U.S. Postal Service to Reduce Jobs, Offer Buyouts (Update1)
By Todd Shields

March 20 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Postal Service will close offices, eliminate jobs and offer early retirement to workers in an effort to save more than $100 million annually.

The agency is closing six of 80 district offices, while reducing administrative staff positions at the district level by 15 percent, the service said in a statement. About 150,000 workers across the U.S. will be offered early retirement.

More than 1,400 mail-processing supervisor and management positions at nearly 400 facilities around the county also are being eliminated, the statement said.

In the past year the service has taken “very aggressive cost-cutting actions,” including a nationwide hiring freeze and halting construction of new postal facilities, the statement said.
