We've been spied on. People have been tortured. Wars have been started and continue and all the while the rich rob us and treat us like serfs but nobody cared much. We can't trust our currency and its the strongest on the planet, we are hated around the world. None of this is news but here we are finally with some public outrage. But is it at the Government that fostered the nation's financial collapse, the lack of enforcement of existing law, the corrupt politicians and the even more corrupt policy that led to our debacle the straw that broke the camel's back? Was it 7 years of secretive tyrannical rule? Hell no, it was a hundred fifty million dollars worth of bonuses.

Don't get me wrong. Anything that brings out the pitchforks and torches is fine with me. Its just surprising that after the billions tossed down the shitter and the overload of abuse from every other corner that this simple little thing would set off the public fire.

2. before you get all thrilled see if the outrage lasts
long enough to make a difference

They're gonna show us Arod kissing himself in the mirror and surely they can revive interest in Octomom enough to distract us again

Money is always the final straw
that breaks the camel's back. People are fed up of the greed on Wall Street and the fat cat politicians. They know this is the Bush legacy.

3. Well, after the public got burned with outrageous fuel prices, lost
their retirement funds, lost their jobs, and lost their homes, I guess that's all it took.

and they were listening and at the water cooler the next morning. Thanks Jon.

17. I agree!
Stewart set a cultural snowball rolling, and he did it from the top of the Matterhorn. You bet that he did a lot to clarify peoples' suspicions that we are all getting screwed hard by these crooks!

11. That fire kicked the rethugs ass the last 2 elections --- and brought in a new Prez
As someone said upthread, this is nothing more than gas on a fire already burning; but that fire was already burning!

I hated Shrub and Shooter long before these greedy fucks at AIG got their bonuses.

12. and a lot of people hated Ollie North, Iran-contra, and ALLLLLL of the "passes"
that they got. Let's not forget the Kennedy Assasinations (plural) and the 'Warren Commission cover-up'! Those/these FIRES have been smouldering for AT LEAST 40-50 years!

There won't be any healing/health in this country until it is dis-infected by sunlight and transparency and taking the fetid bandages off of old wounds that "just won't heal" because we keep covering them up, instead of exposing them to the sunlight of the truth.

13. Well, that’s the whole point about the story of a straw that breaks
the camel’s back. If the camel were not so terribly overloaded in the first place, the tiny weight of a straw would not affect its back. But it’s the very overload of outrage that causes the one extra little “straw” to have such a powerful impact.

15. It's all what TV tells people to think and how to think.
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 08:14 PM by tom_paine
Consider for a moment how much of our daily conversations are driven by what TV tells us we can talk about. If you haven't considered this before, please do so.

After a week, you will most likely be astonished.

Pretty much EVERYTHING spoken of "around the water cooler" is ONLY spoken of because TV tells people, essentially, it's OK to speak about it.

Bring up a non-TV-approved subject, and watch the funny faces and outright hostility yuou get from people.

Has it always been like this, or has it gotten MUCH worse every year for the past 30 years and perhaps more?

In either case, this phenomena is everywhee and everything.

In fact, in your interpersonal conversations, try to count how many times a day somebody other than yourself brings up a non-TV-approved topic. You have to discount work-related topics and other topics people HAVE to discuss, focus only on "recreational conversation"

You will be amazed, and I think what you'll find is what I have found.

That is, when it comes tro "recreational conversation" nowadays it is an absolute astonishemnt to find someone saying ANYTHING that isn't simply repeating what they heard on TV.

Try it, if you haven't yet.

Unfortunately, if Corporate GOP-controlled TV is telling people they can get all upset about these bonuses, it's probably some red herring bullshit designed to distract us from what's actually significant.

If TV tells people to talk about it, it is almost certainly distractional or irrelevant.
